Cycling trips off the beaten track

Here you will find all our cycling trips together. From a twelve-day tour to a three-week trip, in Africa and Asia. The roads and surfaces differ from one destination to the next, but what our trips have in common is the choice for small roads and routes away from the crowds, straight through the landscape and through daily life. When we put our trips together, we combine our own experience of cycling in the country with the local knowledge of our guides and partners. You can choose a group trip with fixed departure dates and a small group, or an individual trip that we plan together with you. Would you rather travel with your own group of friends, family or cycling mates? Then we will put together a tailor-made group trip, matched to your wishes and your level. The support vehicle provides extra flexibility along the way. If you want to shorten a stage, if you are tired or if you simply want to skip a section, you put your bike in the vehicle and ride along for part of the way. That way not everyone has to cover the same distance or ride at the same pace, and you can cycle at your own level as much as possible.

How do CvA travel's cycling holidays work?

CvA travel’s cycling trips are multi-day trips on a mountain bike, gravel bike or e-mountain bike in Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, South Africa, Vietnam and Laos. In Africa you ride mainly on unpaved roads and tracks, although you also cover the occasional stretch of tarmac. In Asia you ride mainly on small paved roads. Where we can, we take unpaved roads and tracks that are also used by local people. The road surface is far from smooth everywhere: holes, potholes, gravel and stretches of poor surface are part of the trip. You ride with a local guide and travel with a support vehicle.

What makes our cycling trips different from an ordinary cycling holiday?

When we put our trips together, we combine our own experience of cycling in the country with the local knowledge of our guides and partners. We know the roads, the terrain and the conditions along the way. We use that knowledge not only when we put the route together, but above all during the trip itself.

That allows us to adjust along the way, based on the group travelling with us. Is a route too demanding for someone, does one rider want to cover more kilometres than another, or are the conditions different from what we expected? Then we can adapt the cycling day. The support vehicle gives extra flexibility as well: you can shorten a stage, skip a section, or get in along the way when you have cycled enough.

It is precisely that combination of knowledge of the country, local guidance and a support vehicle that makes it possible for people of different cycling levels to travel with us together. You do not have to ride every kilometre or keep the same pace as the rest of the group. Along the way we look at what suits you and what suits the group.

Our cycling trips follow small roads and routes away from the crowds as much as possible. In Africa those are often unpaved roads and tracks; in Asia there are many small paved roads instead, supplemented with unpaved roads and tracks where that is possible. That way you reach places along the route that you would not easily get to on an ordinary round trip, and you see more of the landscape and of daily life.

Which cycling trip suits your level?

For our cycling trips a good basic level of fitness is advisable, and experience on a mountain bike or gravel bike is useful. It helps if you are used to cycling several days in a row and if you feel comfortable on the bike.

The level of the trip is indicated on every trip page. That level is based on riding the full route on a bike without electric assistance. If you choose an e-bike or e-gravel bike, the same trip can become a good deal easier. So use the level indicated as a guideline. Not sure whether a trip matches your level? Then get in touch with us. Because we know the destinations and the conditions, we can think along with you about what suits you.

The level does not mean, moreover, that you have to complete every cycling day exactly according to a fixed programme. We can adjust along the way. If you want to shorten a stage, if you are tired or if you want to skip a section, you can use the support vehicle. That way riders of different levels can travel together and still ride at their own level as much as possible.

Would you like a little extra support while cycling? Depending on the trip and the destination you can choose an e-mountain bike or e-gravel bike. In Uganda and Rwanda we have our own bikes; have a look at our bikes and e-bikes. At our other destinations we can hire a suitable bike for you through our local partners. Bike hire is not included in the trip price and is charged separately.

Cycling trips in a group or individually: which will you choose?

Would you like to travel with other riders and does one of our fixed departure dates suit you? Then you can join a group trip. Do you prefer to travel on your own, as a couple or with your own party, and would you like to decide the departure date yourself? Then an individual cycling trip is a good choice. Do you already have a group of friends, family members or cycling mates together? Then we can also put together a tailor-made group trip.

Our group trips have fixed departure dates and go ahead from four participants. Depending on the trip, the group consists of a maximum of six or eight participants. By travelling in small groups, our guides can respond more easily to differences within the group and to whatever happens along the way. Combined with the support vehicle, that leaves room to adapt a cycling day where necessary.

On an individual cycling trip you travel with your own party and our local guidance. You decide the departure date yourself and together we look at which route and which programme best suit your wishes and your cycling level. You can choose an existing trip or, where possible, have it adapted.

Are you travelling with your own group? Then we combine the advantages of both. You travel together as a group, but without other participants, and we match the trip to your wishes, your level and your preferred departure date.

Have a look at all group cycling trips or all individual cycling trips and find out which way of travelling suits you best.

Which bike will you ride our cycling trips on?

Our cycling trips are ridden on a mountain bike, gravel bike, e-mountain bike or e-gravel bike. Which bike suits you best depends on the destination, the route and the surface, but also on your personal preference and experience. On routes with a lot of unpaved roads and tracks, a mountain bike can be a good choice. If a trip consists mainly of gravel roads, small paved roads and less technical terrain, a gravel bike can be more comfortable.

On all our trips you can bring your own bike or hire one. Which hire bikes are available differs by destination. In Uganda and Rwanda we have our own Specialized mountain bikes and e-mountain bikes. Have a look at our bikes and e-bikes. At our other destinations we can hire a suitable bike for the trip through our local partners.

Would you like a little extra support, for instance on longer cycling days or on climbs? Depending on the trip you can choose an e-mountain bike or e-gravel bike. With one of those you ride the same route with electric assistance and keep more energy for the surroundings and for the rest of the trip.

Cycling trips by country: Uganda, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Vietnam and Laos

In Uganda we have our largest range of cycling trips. You ride mainly on unpaved roads and tracks past crater lakes, through villages and the green interior, and visit several national parks along the way. In places where the wildlife makes it necessary, you ride accompanied by a ranger. Depending on the trip you combine the cycling with safaris, boat trips and meetings with local people.

Rwanda is hilly, and you notice that on the bike. The routes take you over a combination of paved and unpaved roads, past lakes, tea and banana plantations and through small villages. The necessary metres of climbing are part of it. Anyone who would like to make the climbs a little easier can choose an e-mountain bike.

In South Africa, three different worlds come together in one cycling trip. You start in the bush of Greater Kruger, where safari and wildlife take centre stage. After that you travel to Cape Town and discover the coast and the city, partly by bike. The third part takes you to the semi-desert of the Klein Karoo, where you ride for several days on wide-open gravel roads. It is precisely the variation between bush, coast and city, and the rugged landscapes of the Klein Karoo, that make this trip distinctive.

In Tanzania you can cycle around Kilimanjaro in nine days and discover the different landscapes surrounding Africa’s highest mountain. The route takes you over a mix of gravel, unpaved roads and tarmac. If you would like to experience more of Tanzania, you can extend the cycling trip with a climb of Kilimanjaro, a five-day safari or a stay on Zanzibar. A combination of several of these is also possible, so that together we can put a longer trip through Tanzania together.

In Vietnam and Laos the cycling looks quite different again. You mainly follow small paved roads through mountain areas, past rice fields and through villages, and take smaller unpaved roads and tracks where possible. The road surface can vary considerably along the way, from good tarmac to holes, potholes and gravel. You can explore both countries separately.

How demanding are the cycling days in Africa and Asia?

How demanding a cycling day is differs by trip and by destination. It is not only the distance that counts. The surface, the metres of climbing, the temperature and the number of cycling days in a row also determine how much effort a day asks of you. A relatively short ride on unpaved roads can therefore be harder than a longer ride on good tarmac.

Africa differs from Asia in this respect too. In Africa you ride a lot on unpaved roads and tracks, sometimes with considerable differences in altitude. In Asia the roads are more often paved, but you ride a lot on small roads through hilly and mountainous country. The road surface can also vary considerably along the way, with holes, potholes, gravel and unpaved sections.

Our cycling days are not fixed entirely in kilometres that everyone has to cover. The local guide looks at the group, the conditions and how the cycling day is going. Where necessary we can adjust along the way. If you want to ride fewer kilometres, if you are tired or if you have cycled enough for that day, you can put your bike in the support vehicle and skip part of the route.

On several trips, cycling days alternate with other activities. That could be a safari, a boat trip, a walk or a visit along the way. That way the trip is not only about the number of kilometres on the bike, but about discovering the country.

What does CvA travel arrange during your cycling trip?

During our cycling trips we arrange virtually everything you need along the way. From the route, the accommodation and the local guidance to the support vehicle, the meals and the excursions and activities that are part of the programme. While you are cycling we provide water and snacks or fresh fruit. Where extra guidance is needed, for instance because of wildlife, a ranger comes along. That way you can ride without worries and experience the country.

On some days, deliberately, not everything is arranged or included in advance. That could be an arrival or departure day, for example, or a day on which you can choose between different activities or ways of spending your time. The day-by-day description of each trip indicates what has been arranged for that day and what options you have yourself.

Exactly what is included in the trip price differs by trip. On the relevant trip page you will therefore find an overview of what is and is not included. Bike hire is charged separately and you arrange international flights yourself. You are responsible for matters such as visas, insurance and any vaccinations. We give you the practical information you need in advance so that you set off well prepared.

Terrain, climate and the best time to travel

The best time to travel differs by country and sometimes even by region within a country. Rainy and dry seasons, temperature and altitude all influence the conditions along the way. That is why we plan our group trips in periods that suit the destination and the type of cycling trip as well as possible. For an individual trip we look together at which travel period best suits your plans.

Conditions can change within a season as well. A shower of rain does not automatically mean that cycling is impossible, but an unpaved road can become muddy or temporarily less passable, for example. Heat, drought or roadworks can equally affect the conditions while you are cycling.

How to prepare

Good preparation means you get more out of your cycling trip. Try to cycle regularly before you leave and build up the distance gradually. It helps to get on the bike for several days in a row as well. Where possible, choose terrain similar to what you will meet during the trip, such as gravel, unpaved roads or hilly ground.

Are you going to ride a different type of bike during the trip from the one you are used to? Then try it out beforehand. That certainly applies to an e-mountain bike or e-gravel bike. The extra weight, the assistance and the handling can feel different from your own bike.

Well before departure, check which travel documents, vaccinations and any visas are needed for your destination. With every trip we give practical information to help you on your way, but always check the current requirements before you leave.

Are you unsure whether your fitness or cycling experience matches a particular trip? Then get in touch with us. We will think along with you about the trip, the level and the bike that suit you best.

Viewing, comparing or requesting cycling trips

Why choose a cycling trip with CvA travel?

At CvA travel a cycling trip is not only about the kilometres you cover, but about what you experience along the way. When we put our trips together, we combine our own experience of cycling in the country with the local knowledge of our guides and partners. That is how routes come about that take you away from the crowds and let you experience the country close up.

We travel on a small scale, with local guidance and a support vehicle. That leaves room for differences in level and allows us to adjust along the way when that is needed. At the same time we arrange virtually everything during the trip, so that you can concentrate on the cycling, the surroundings and everything you come across along the way.

Have a look at the overview above and find the cycling trip that suits you. Not sure yet? Then get in touch with us and tell us what your cycling experience is, what you are looking for and how you like to travel. We will then think along with you about the trip and the bike that suit you best.

Frequently asked questions about our cycling trips

What level of fitness do you need for a cycling trip?

A good basic level of fitness is advisable and it helps if you are used to cycling several days in a row. The level of the trip is indicated on every trip page. That level is based on riding the full route on a bike without electric assistance.

If you choose an e-bike or e-gravel bike, the same trip can become a good deal easier. Nor do you have to ride every cycling day in full. The support vehicle is there precisely so that we can adjust along the way. Not sure whether a trip matches your fitness or experience? Then get in touch with us and we will think along with you.

Can I skip a cycling day if it becomes too much?

Yes. A support vehicle is available on all our cycling trips. If you want to shorten a stage, skip a climb or a section, or not ride at all on a cycling day, that is possible. You can put your bike in the vehicle and, where possible, rejoin later.

On a group trip, too, not everyone has to cover the same distance or ride at the same pace. Tell the guide what you would like and together you will see what is possible that day. On an individual trip we can match the cycling route and the cycling days entirely to your wishes and your level.

What kind of bike do I need for a cycling trip?

That depends on the destination, the route and the surface, but also on your personal preference and experience. Depending on the trip you ride a mountain bike, gravel bike, e-mountain bike or e-gravel bike. On routes with a lot of unpaved roads and tracks, a mountain bike can be a good choice. On gravel roads, small paved roads and less technical terrain, a gravel bike can be more comfortable.

On all our trips you can bring your own bike or hire one. In Uganda and Rwanda we have our own Specialized mountain bikes and e-mountain bikes. Have a look at our bikes and e-bikes. At our other destinations we can hire a suitable bike through our local partners. Bike hire is not included in the trip price and is charged separately.

Do I travel in a group or can I travel alone?

Both are possible. Our group trips have fixed departure dates and go ahead from four participants. Depending on the trip, the group consists of a maximum of six or eight participants.

If you are travelling alone and join a group trip, you will in principle share a room with a participant of the same sex where that is possible. If that is not possible, we will contact you in advance. In that case a single room may be needed and additional costs will arise. You will find the single supplement with the price information on the relevant trip page.

Would you rather travel individually? Then you decide the departure date yourself and we can match the trip entirely to your wishes and your level. You travel with your own party and our local guidance. That is possible as a couple as well.

Do you already have a group of friends, family members or cycling mates together? Then we can put together a tailor-made group trip, matched to your wishes, your level and your preferred departure date.

What is included in a cycling trip?

During our cycling trips we arrange virtually everything you need along the way. Think of accommodation, local guidance, transport during the trip, meals and the excursions and activities that are part of the programme. While you are cycling we provide water and snacks or fresh fruit. Exactly what is included differs by trip and is set out with the price information on the relevant trip page.

Bike hire is not included in the trip price and is charged separately. You also arrange international flights yourself. Personal expenses, tips and certain optional activities may equally fall outside the trip price. So for each trip, check what is and is not included.

How long does a cycling trip last?

Our cycling trips range from around nine days to three weeks or longer. How a trip is put together differs by destination. Cycling days alternate with other parts of the trip, such as a safari, a boat trip, a walk, an excursion or a transfer to the next area.

Would you like to travel for longer? Various trips can be extended or combined. In Tanzania, for instance, you can combine a cycling trip around Kilimanjaro with a climb of the mountain, a safari or a stay on Zanzibar. Vietnam and Laos can also be joined together into one longer trip.

On an individual trip we can match the duration and the programme entirely to your wishes.

Can I ride an existing route on a date of my own?

Yes. Many of our existing trips can also be made individually on a date of your choosing. You then travel with your own party and our local guidance.

On an individual trip we can also match the programme entirely to your wishes. Would you like to travel for longer or shorter, adapt the cycling days or add an extra activity? Then we will look at the options together. What is possible depends among other things on the season, the availability of accommodation and the conditions at the destination.

Would you like to know what is possible for your trip? Then request a tailor-made cycling trip and tell us which trip, which travel period and which wishes you have in mind.

Is a cycling trip in Africa safe?

Safety plays an important part in putting our cycling trips together and in running them. In doing so we combine our own experience of cycling in the country with the local knowledge of our guides and partners. They know the area, the roads and the conditions on the ground.

In areas where cycling requires extra guidance because of wildlife, a ranger comes along. We only cycle in or around areas with wildlife in places and in ways that are suitable for it. During the cycling days a support vehicle is also available, and if you have a mechanical problem along the way the local guides can help.

Before departure you receive practical information about the destination. If you have specific questions about safety or about a particular route, do get in touch with us.

When is the best time to go on a cycling trip?

The best time to travel differs by country and sometimes even by region within a country. Rainy and dry seasons, temperature and altitude influence the conditions while you are cycling. That is why we plan our group trips in periods that suit the destination and the type of cycling trip as well as possible.

Conditions can differ within a season as well. Rain does not automatically mean that cycling is impossible, but it can affect unpaved roads and tracks, for example.

If you choose an individual cycling trip, we look together at which travel period best suits the destination, the route and your plans. Would you like to see the departure dates of our group trips side by side? Then have a look at the calendar of departure dates.

How do I book a cycling trip?

Have you found a cycling trip that suits you? Then look at the departure dates on the trip page and follow the steps to sign up. After that we will contact you to go through the trip with you in more detail, such as your choice of bike, your cycling level, any wishes you have and the practical preparation.

Would you rather travel on a date of your own or adapt the programme? Then request a tailor-made cycling trip. We discuss your wishes and make a proposal on that basis, so that you know what your trip will look like and what is included before you decide.

Are you still hesitating between different trips, or are you not sure which trip suits your level and your wishes? Then get in touch with us. We are happy to think along with you.
