How an individual cycling trip with CvA travel works

An individual cycling trip with CvA travel is a trip on which you set the departure date yourself and travel with your own guide and driver. We can match the route and the programme to your level, your wishes and the time you have. Individual cycling trips are possible in Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Vietnam and Laos, on a mountain bike, gravel bike, e-mountain bike or e-gravel bike, depending on the destination and the route.

What is an individual cycling trip?

An individual cycling trip is a trip for you alone or for the party you travel with. You set the departure date yourself and travel with your own local guide and driver. No other, unknown participants join your trip.

You start with one of our existing trips as a basis. We then look together at what adjustments are possible: the level, the length of the trip, extra rest days or activities you would like to add.

We have got to know our destinations by bike ourselves and work there with experienced guides and partners. That means we can advise you on what is possible within a route and which period suits your trip best.

How do you put your individual cycling trip together?

You choose an existing trip as a starting point and tell us what you would like to change: the departure date, the length, the number of riding days, the level, the bike and any activities you would like to add.

We look at how many days you have, how you like to ride and what you want to experience along the way. On that basis we make a proposal with the route, the accommodation, the activities and the price. Only then do you decide whether to book.

Travelling alone or with your own party?

You can travel alone or with your partner, family or friends. On an individual cycling trip you travel with your own local guide and driver, and we match the programme as far as possible to your level and wishes.

If you travel alone, the pace can be matched entirely to you. If you travel with two or three people, we look at the level and wishes of the party as a whole.

Do you have your own group of at least four participants? Then we make it a tailor-made group trip. You set the departure date yourself and, by arrangement, we can make an existing trip longer or shorter or adjust parts of it.

What guiding do you get on an individual cycling trip?

You ride with your own local guide, and a driver travels with the group in the support vehicle. The guide knows the route and the area and takes the conditions into account along the way. You can count on support if you have a mechanical problem, and where we ride among wildlife in national parks a ranger comes along.

Because you travel individually, there is a great deal of room for flexibility. Would you like to skip a climb or part of a stage, stop earlier or shorten the riding day? That is possible. The pace is matched to you and your party as well.

That is an important difference from a group trip: there we take the whole group into account, while on an individual trip we can match far more to your own pace and wishes.

Which bike do you ride on your individual cycling trip?

Which bike suits you best depends on the destination, the route and your own preference. In Uganda and Rwanda we advise a mountain bike or e-mountain bike. If you are an experienced gravel rider and prefer a gravel bike, that can also be a good choice on some routes.

In Tanzania, Vietnam and Laos you can choose, depending on the trip, from a mountain bike, gravel bike, e-mountain bike or e-gravel bike. Electric support can be a good choice above all on routes with a lot of climbing and steep gradients.

You can bring your own bike or hire one through us. In Uganda and Rwanda we have our own Specialized mountain bikes and e-mountain bikes. On the other destinations we work with our partners on the ground for hire bikes. Which bikes are available and whether bike hire is included in the price is stated in the price information for each trip.

You can read more about our own bikes in Uganda and Rwanda on the page about our bikes.

In which countries can you make an individual cycling trip?

Individual cycling trips are possible in Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Vietnam and Laos. Each destination has a character of its own: from wildlife and green landscapes in Uganda and the hills of Rwanda to riding around Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and the mountains of northern Vietnam and northern Laos.

On an individual cycling trip you can also combine Uganda and Rwanda, or Vietnam and Laos. That way you see two countries in one trip, each with its own landscape, culture and kind of riding.

Individual trip or group trip: which suits you?

An individual cycling trip suits you if you want to set your own departure date, prefer to travel with your own guide and driver, or want more room to match the programme to your wishes. On a group trip you leave on a fixed date and travel with other participants.

The price is built up differently as well. On an individual trip it depends among other things on the number of travellers, the length and the programme. On a group trip the price is the one listed with the relevant departure date.

Do you have your own group of at least four participants? Then a tailor-made group trip is possible as well. You choose the departure date yourself and, by arrangement, we can make an existing trip longer or shorter or adjust parts of it.

Not sure which form of trip suits you? Get in touch with us. We are glad to think along with you.

What does a riding day look like on an individual trip?

Beforehand the guide goes through with you what to expect that day. After breakfast you get on the bike, and along the way you take time for breaks, for something to eat and drink and for what you come across.

Because you travel individually, there is a great deal of room to match the pace to you and your party. Would you like to skip a climb, shorten part of a stage or stop earlier? That is possible. The support vehicle makes it possible to adjust the riding day where needed.

Exactly what a riding day looks like differs by destination and route. The distances, the amount of climbing, the surface and the activities along the way therefore differ from day to day.

What determines the price of an individual cycling trip?

The price of an individual cycling trip depends among other things on the number of travellers, the length of the trip, the accommodation, the programme and the bike you choose. If you travel with two or three people, costs such as the guide, the driver and the support vehicle can be shared.

The trip page gives the price information that applies to that trip. If we adapt an existing trip, or put together a different programme with you, you receive a proposal that clearly states what is and is not included.

Flights, visas, insurance, personal expenses and tips are usually not included. Bike hire can also fall outside the price. What applies to your trip is always set out in the price information or the proposal.

Frequently asked questions about individual cycling trips

What is the difference between an individual cycling trip and a group trip?

On an individual cycling trip you set the departure date yourself and travel with your own local guide and driver. We can match the pace and the programme as far as possible to you and your party. On a group trip you leave on a fixed date with other participants and we take the level and pace of the whole group into account.

The main difference is therefore the freedom and the flexibility. Individually you have more scope to adjust the date, the length and the content of the trip.

Can I choose the departure date myself?

Yes. On an individual cycling trip you decide when you want to leave. We then look at whether that period is suitable for the destination and the route and whether the accommodation and the guiding are available.

Not every route is equally suitable for riding all year round, so we advise you in advance on the best period. Where possible we can also adjust the standard of accommodation to your wishes, for example by upgrading or by choosing simpler options.

If your preferred date or accommodation is not available, we look for a suitable alternative together.

Can I book a group trip as an individual trip?

Yes. On several trips an existing group trip can be the basis for an individual trip. You travel on your own date with your own guide and driver, without other participants.

The route stays broadly the same, but we can make adjustments by arrangement: an extra day, a shorter or longer trip, an adjusted riding day, an extra activity or a different standard of accommodation. What is possible depends on the route, the season and availability on the ground.

Do I really travel alone, or does someone come along?

You travel without other participants, but with your own local guide and driver. Support transport is available on the riding days, and where we ride among wildlife in national parks a ranger comes along.

You can travel individually on your own, but of course also with your partner, family or friends. We match the programme as far as possible to your party. The number of travellers affects the price per person, because costs such as the guide, the driver and the vehicle are shared.

Is the route matched to my level?

Yes. On an individual cycling trip we take account of your fitness, your cycling experience and the way you like to ride. On that basis we look at which route, level and bike suit you best.

There is a great deal of room for flexibility along the way as well. You can skip a climb or part of a stage, get in later or shorten a riding day. An e-mountain bike or e-gravel bike can also make a trip with a lot of climbing more manageable.

What does an individual cycling trip cost?

The price depends among other things on the country, the number of travellers, the length of the trip, the programme and the accommodation. If you travel with several people, costs such as the guide, the driver and the support vehicle are shared between more travellers.

You receive a full travel proposal in advance with a day-by-day programme and clear price information, setting out exactly what is and is not included.

So you know precisely where you stand before you book.

Which bike can I use on an individual cycling trip?

Which bike suits you best depends on the destination, the route and your own preference. In Uganda and Rwanda we advise a mountain bike or e-mountain bike. If you are an experienced gravel rider and prefer a gravel bike, that can also be a good choice on some routes.

In Tanzania, Vietnam and Laos you can, depending on the trip, also choose a gravel bike or e-gravel bike. You can bring your own bike or hire one through us. In Uganda and Rwanda we have our own Specialized mountain bikes and e-mountain bikes. On the other destinations we work with our partners on the ground for hire bikes.

Which bikes are available, what the hire costs and whether bike hire is included in the price is stated in the price information for each trip.

In which countries can I ride individually?

Individual cycling trips are possible in Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Vietnam and Laos. Each destination has its own character and its own offering, from wildlife and green landscapes in Uganda and the hills of Rwanda to riding around Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and the mountains of northern Vietnam and northern Laos.

You can also combine Uganda and Rwanda, or Vietnam and Laos, in one individual cycling trip. South Africa is currently offered only as a group trip.

How long does an individual cycling trip take?

That differs by trip and destination. You can take one of our existing individual trips as a starting point and, where possible, shorten or lengthen it. That way we can match the programme better to the time you have and what you want to experience along the way.

Would you like to stay longer in one place, add an extra rest day or combine different areas? Then we look at how that fits the route. If you have less time, we look at which parts we can adjust without the programme becoming too full.

So it is not only the number of days but above all what you want to ride and experience during those days that shapes your trip.

How do I request an individual cycling trip?

First have a look at which trip or destination appeals to you, then request a tailor-made cycling trip. Tell us when you want to leave, how many people are travelling, which bike you prefer and what your wishes are.

We would also like to hear something about your cycling experience and your fitness, so that we can judge which route and which level suit you.

On that basis you receive a full travel proposal with a day-by-day programme, the price and a clear overview of what is and is not included. Not sure yet which trip suits you best? Then get in touch with us and we will think along with you.
