The Route During Your Individual Trip Along Waterfalls and the Nile in Uganda

You begin your adventure from Entebbe and cycle through local villages to the Ssezibwa Falls. Next, you discover the tropical Mabira rainforest, get to know adventurous Jinja, and enjoy challenging trails along the banks of the Nile. After a relaxing transfer to Mount Elgon, you cycle up to the spectacular Sipi Falls, surrounded by coffee plantations and beautiful green surroundings. Finally, you reach the plains of Karamoja and Pian Upe National Park, where you will come face to face with wild animals such as giraffes, zebras, and cheetahs during a cycling safari. An unforgettable route full of adventure and variety, where you truly get to know Uganda!

Cycling Straight Through the Tropical Mabira Forest

One of the highlights on the bike is the ride through the Mabira Forest. This is one of the last remaining tropical rainforests in Central Uganda. The temperature is pleasantly cool beneath the canopy, and the sounds of the jungle are all around you. As you cycle along the forest trails, there is a high chance of spotting monkeys, such as the red-tailed monkey or the grey-cheeked mangabey.

This forest is also a paradise for bird lovers. Cycling here is adventurous but very manageable. The smell of damp earth and flowers, combined with the sounds of birds and monkeys, makes this a sensory experience you would completely miss in a car.

Your route: a bikepacking holiday along waterfalls and the Nile

Your adventure begins in Entebbe, from where you set off by bike through a series of peaceful rural villages towards the serene Ssezibwa Falls. From there, you ride into the tropical Mabira rainforest and onward to the vibrant town of Jinja – a hub of adventure nestled on the banks of the Nile. You follow off-road trails along the river’s edge before a comfortable transfer takes you to Mount Elgon. Here, a steady climb brings you to the spectacular Sipi Falls, surrounded by coffee plantations and lush green hills. The journey concludes on the open plains of Karamoja and in Pian Upe National Park, where a cycling safari may offer thrilling encounters with giraffes, zebras or even cheetahs. An unforgettable route, rich in contrast and discovery – and a chance to truly experience Uganda from the saddle.

East Africa: Jinja and the Source of the Nile

The journey takes you to Jinja, the adventure capital of East Africa, situated on the shores of Lake Victoria. This is where the longest river in the world originates: the Nile. You cycle along the banks of this mighty river, through villages and past fields. It is special to see how the river is a lifeline for the people living there; washing, fishing, and playing in the water are everyday sights.

In Jinja itself, you can taste the atmosphere of a historic city with plenty of colonial architecture. An absolute highlight is a boat trip to the actual source of the Nile. The moment you see where the water from Lake Victoria begins its thousands-of-kilometres-long journey to Egypt is magical. For the real daredevils, there are also options for white-water rafting or kayaking in Jinja.

Heading to the Heights: Sipi Falls and Mount Elgon

The landscape changes completely as you travel eastwards to the foot of Mount Elgon. This is an extinct volcano with the largest caldera in the world. Here you will find the spectacular Sipi Falls, a series of three waterfalls cascading down the mountainside. The surroundings are green, mountainous, and filled with coffee plantations.

Cycling here is a bit tougher due to the differences in elevation, but the views make up for everything. You look out over the vast plains of Karamoja in the depths below. You can take a beautiful walk to the foot of the waterfalls to feel the power of the water up close, or go on a coffee tour with local farmers who will show you how the famous Arabica coffee is grown and processed.

Murchison Falls in Uganda: The Ultimate Spectacle

A trip themed around waterfalls is not complete without Murchison Falls. In this national park, the entire Nile forces its way through a gorge just 7 metres wide, before crashing down 43 metres. The power and the sound of this roaring water are unprecedented.

The park is rich in wildlife: you will find large herds of elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, and lions. A boat safari to the foot of the waterfall is a must; along the way, you will see hundreds of hippos and massive Nile crocodiles lying on the sandbanks. It is the icing on the cake of this water-rich journey.

Freedom and Comfort in Uganda With Your Own Guide

The great advantage of this individual trip is the flexibility. You hit the road with your own guide/driver and a private vehicle. Do you have a day with less energy? Then we take it easier, or you can skip a section by car. Do you actually want to put in extra kilometres or linger somewhere longer for a photo? We will arrange that. You determine the rhythm of the day.

Our guides are more than just escorts; they are your bridge to the local culture. They speak the language, know the customs, and ensure safe and spontaneous encounters. Additionally, they are trained in bike mechanics, so a puncture or technical defect is expertly resolved on the spot. This allows you to enjoy your holiday without a care in the world.

Practical Information About the Uganda Trip

During the trip, you will stay in atmospheric lodges and guesthouses, carefully selected for their location and comfort. You often sleep in beautiful spots, such as on the banks of the Nile or overlooking the waterfalls. After an active day, there is nothing better than relaxing with a cold drink and a good dinner while the sun goes down.

For the bikes, you have a choice: you can bring your own trusted bike (provided it is suitable for unpaved terrain) or use our top-quality rental bikes. We have a fleet of Specialized mountain bikes and e-mountain bikes available locally. The e-mountain bike is particularly recommended in the hilly terrain around Sipi and Mount Elgon; it makes the climb just a bit more pleasant so you can focus more on the beautiful surroundings.

At CvA Travel, we select our accommodation carefully and with attention to local involvement

Many of our chosen places to stay directly support the local community, which means that as a traveller, you contribute to a positive impact on the daily lives of the people in Uganda.
