The green cycling holiday full of water and life in Uganda

While western Uganda is known for its savannahs, this trip shows you the lush, green heart of the country. The route is all about water: from cascading waterfalls to the mighty flow of the Nile. The landscape is tropical and fertile, featuring vast tea and sugar cane plantations and dense rainforest. Because you are travelling individually with your own guide, you have plenty of time to stop wherever you want and truly take in your surroundings.

You will cycle along red unpaved roads and narrow paths that wind through the landscape. Along the way, you will pass colourful villages where life is lived outdoors. Cycling straight through the tropical Mabira Forest

One of the cycling highlights is the ride through the Mabira Forest. This is one of the last remaining tropical rainforests in Central Uganda. The temperature is pleasantly cool beneath the canopy, and the sounds of the jungle are all around you. While cycling along the forest paths, there is a high chance of spotting monkeys, such as the red-tailed monkey or the grey-cheeked mangabey. This forest is also a paradise for bird lovers. Heading up high: Sipi Falls and Mount Elgon

The landscape changes completely as you travel eastwards, to the foot of Mount Elgon. This is an extinct volcano with the largest caldera in the world. Here you will find the spectacular Sipi Falls, a series of three waterfalls cascading down the mountainside. The surroundings are green, mountainous, and full of coffee plantations. Cycling here is a bit tougher due to the elevation changes, but the views make up for everything. You look out over the vast plains of Karamoja in the distance below. Here, you can enjoy a beautiful hike to the foot of the waterfalls to feel the power of the water up close, or take a coffee tour with local farmers who will show you how the famous Arabica coffee is grown and processed.

Murchison Falls in Uganda: the ultimate spectacle

A trip dedicated to waterfalls is not complete without Murchison Falls. In this national park, the entire Nile forces itself through a gorge just 7 metres wide, only to thunder 43 metres downwards. The power and sound of this roaring water are unprecedented. The park is rich in wildlife: you will find large herds of elephants, giraffes, buffalo, and lions. A boat safari to the foot of the waterfall is a must; along the way, you will see hundreds of hippos and massive Nile crocodiles resting on the sandbanks. For a more comfortable journey, you can opt for full support with a support vehicle and driver. Day 1: Welcome to the heart of Africa

Day 2: Cycling to the Ssezibwa Falls
After breakfast, your individual cycling trip kicks off with a short boat ride to the starting point. You will cycle via adventurous off-road routes through local communities towards the Ssezibwa Falls. Here, you will discover a place steeped in legends and stunning nature.

Day 3: Plantations and rainforest
Today, you cycle from the Ssezibwa Falls to the Griffin Falls. The route takes you via off-road tracks past tea and sugarcane plantations. Next, you will cycle straight into the tropical Mabira rainforest. Along the way, you can enjoy the exotic sounds of numerous birds and keep an eye out for animals like monkeys. At the Griffin Falls, there is an option to take part in a zipline experience, soaring high above the canopy for unique views of the rainforest, spotting fish eagles and colourful turacos. You will spend the night on the banks of the Nile at Wildwaters Camp Kalagala.

Day 4: Along the Nile to Jinja
After breakfast, you cycle along the banks of the Nile before crossing to the other side by canoe. Once across, you cycle over unpaved routes past authentic villages, lush green landscapes, and once again along the banks of the Nile. Along the way, you will pass several waterfalls, including the Kalagala Falls, the powerful Itanda Falls, and the Busowoka Falls. The small islands dotted between the rapids are particularly special, providing fantastic spots for birdwatchers. You will see various water birds such as cormorants in their natural habitat. After the Itanda Falls, you cycle the final stretch into Jinja.

Day 6: Transfer to Casa del Turista Wanale Falls
A vehicle transfer will take you from Jinja to Casa del Turista Wanale Falls, located at the foot of Mount Elgon. This day is all about relaxing and preparing for the intensive cycling day ahead. Enjoy the surroundings and the beautiful nature right on your accommodation’s doorstep.

Day 7: Climbing to Sipi Falls
A tough cycling day is on the agenda today. You depart from the foot of Mount Elgon, an extinct volcano on the border of Uganda and Kenya, and cycle uphill through the national park of the same name. You will ride through hilly terrain dotted with coffee and matoke (banana) plantations, soaking in the lush green surroundings. You finish at the spectacular Sipi Falls, where you will spend the night in the Sipi Falls Lodge, boasting a magnificent view of the waterfalls cascading down the slopes of Mount Elgon.

Day 8: Exploring the Sipi Falls and local culture
After a relaxed breakfast, you will hike to three impressive waterfalls tumbling down the green slopes of Mount Elgon. During the walk to the largest waterfall, you will cross small bridges over rippling streams. The waterfalls are nestled in a lush green landscape featuring terraced hills and picturesque plantations full of coffee, bananas, and other crops. As the water forcefully crashes down, it creates a fine mist that, combined with the vibrant colours of the surroundings, creates a magical atmosphere. In the afternoon, the choice is yours: if you are a coffee lover, you can join a comprehensive coffee tour where you will be welcomed by a local family. They will show you the entire coffee production process and share their traditions. Another option is a cultural discovery tour to an authentic cave, where you will learn more about the Sabiny people. Day 9: Cycling to Pian Upe
The day begins with a solid two-and-a-half-hour climb up the green slopes of Mount Elgon. Following this, you slowly descend via narrow, winding paths through a beautiful green landscape towards the vast plains of the Karamoja region. As soon as you cross a bridge, you enter Pian Upe National Park, where you are surrounded by a breathtaking panorama. On the horizon, you can see Mount Elgon and Mount Kadam as you enjoy the varied landscape of rock formations and plains. You will stay at Kos Lodge, right in the heart of nature, surrounded by animals like giraffes, zebras, and cheetahs. A truly special highlight of your individual trip to Uganda.

This volcanic mountain in the Mount Elgon National Park is home to the world’s largest caldera and rises high above the landscape at 4,321 metres. The highest peak, Wagagai, offers a breathtaking view over Uganda and Kenya—a magical reward after a challenging trek. The nature surrounding Mount Elgon is spectacular. You will hike through vast bamboo forests, moorlands, and alpine vegetation featuring unique plant species such as the Giant Lobelia and Everlasting Flowers. 1. Bushiyi Trail (3 days): The fastest and most intensive route to the top, ideal for the fit adventurer who wants to reach the Wagagai peak in a short amount of time.
2. Sipi to Bushiyi Trail (4 days): A varied and scenic trek starting at the famous Sipi Falls and ending at the Bushiyi Trail Head in Bududa. Along the way, you hike through diverse landscapes and enjoy magnificent views of Mubiyi Peak and Jackson Peak. Furthermore, this route is perfect for experiencing the rich flora and fauna of the region. What is the best time to travel to Uganda?

Uganda is a beautiful, green country on the equator. As a result, it is always tropically warm. Do you want to spot gorillas or go on a safari? The good news is that you can visit Uganda all year round. The country is always green and fertile. Still, it is smart to take the seasons into account.

The dry periods are the most popular

Most travellers opt for the dry seasons. The chance of sunshine is highest then, and the paths in the parks are easily passable. The best months are:

May to October
December to February

The rainy season is beautifully green and quiet

Because Uganda is a tropical country, there can always be a shower. That is exactly what creates such beautiful green nature! There are two periods with more rain:

March and April (the long rainy season)
November (the short rainy season)

Do not let this put you off. The rain showers are often short and heavy. They usually fall at night or in the late afternoon. Afterwards, the sun often shines again.

Why travel in the rainy season? Travelling in these months actually has its advantages!

It is much quieter in the parks (fewer tourists).
Nature is at its most beautiful: everything is fresh and bright green.
You will not be bothered by dust on the roads.

Always pleasant temperatures

Uganda is located on the equator, but because the country is also at a high altitude, the heat is not oppressive. The temperature is very pleasant. In the capital, Kampala, for example, it is 26°C on average.

The north: Here the land is lower, which means it is often warmer.
The south: Here you will find high mountains and volcanoes. It cools down nicely here in the evenings. A warm jumper or fleece jacket is therefore an absolute must-have for the evening hours.
