Individual 14-day cycling trip in Uganda: discover the west with your own guide

Do you want to experience Uganda at your own pace, away from the crowds, but with the certainty of professional guidance? During this individual 14-day cycling trip through western Uganda, you will discover the ‘Pearl of Africa’ up close. You will cycle through a backdrop of green crater lakes, vast savannahs, and dense rainforests. Because you hit the road with your own guide and driver, you determine the rhythm. Stop wherever you want for a photo, a chat with the locals, or simply to enjoy the view. We take care of the route, safety, and logistics; all you have to do is pedal and enjoy.

The western Uganda route full of contrasts: from crater lakes to savannah

Western Uganda is perhaps the most scenically diverse part of the country. In fourteen days, you will cycle through completely different worlds. The journey starts in the green hills around Fort Portal, where you cycle past dozens of crater lakes and through endless banana and tea plantations. It is a photogenic start where you are immediately introduced to the fertile countryside.

Next, you descend into the impressive Rift Valley and cycle towards the wilderness. In Queen Elizabeth National Park, you swap the green hills for open savannahs. Here, you literally cycle amongst the wildlife. The route then continues southwards, towards the mountains and the impenetrable forest of Bwindi, ultimately winding down to relax on the shores of the fairytale-like Lake Bunyonyi.

What is the best time to travel to Uganda?

Uganda is a beautiful, green country on the equator. As a result, it is always tropically warm. Do you want to spot gorillas or go on a safari? The good news is that you can visit Uganda all year round. The country is always green and fertile. Still, it is smart to take the seasons into account.

The dry periods are the most popular

Most travellers opt for the dry seasons. The chance of sunshine is highest then, and the paths in the parks are easily passable. The best months are May to October, and December to February.

The rainy season is green and quiet

Because Uganda is a tropical country, there can always be a shower. That is exactly what creates such beautiful green nature! There are two periods with more rain: March to April (the long rainy season), and November (the short rainy season). Do not let this put you off. The rain showers are often short and heavy. They usually fall at night or in the late afternoon. Afterwards, the sun often shines again.

Why travel in the rainy season?

Travelling in these months actually has its advantages! It is much quieter in the parks (fewer tourists). Nature is at its most beautiful: everything is fresh and bright green. You will not be bothered by dust on the roads.

Pleasant temperatures

Uganda is located on the equator, but because the country is also at a high altitude, the heat is not oppressive. The temperature is very pleasant. In the capital, Kampala, for example, it is 26°C on average.

The north: Here the land is lower, which means it is often warmer.

The south: Here you will find high mountains and volcanoes. It cools down nicely here in the evenings. A warm jumper or fleece jacket is therefore an absolute must-have for the evening hours.

The route during your individual cycling trip through Uganda

During this 12-day individual cycling trip, you will discover the spectacular and varied west of Uganda. On a mountain bike or e-mountain bike, you cycle past colourful villages, green tea plantations, and breathtaking landscapes, ranging from savannahs and crater lakes to mountainous rainforests. Along the way, you will meet the cheerful and hospitable locals, allowing you to experience the real Uganda up close. Thanks to your guide, who knows every hidden route and special trail, you will cycle far off the beaten track. Highlights include cycling straight through Queen Elizabeth National Park, an optional unique gorilla trekking experience in the misty Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, and an adventurous safari bike ride in the wildlife-rich Lake Mburo National Park. This trip serves as an example and can be fully customised to your personal wishes.

Why Uganda is the ultimate cycling destination

Uganda is a destination that will likely surprise you. Where many trips focus on either nature or culture, Uganda offers a rare combination of both. The landscape changes every day, transitioning effortlessly from savannahs to rainforests to mountainous terrain. But what truly makes this destination special is the atmosphere. From the moment you arrive, you are warmly welcomed.

The ‘African Massage’ experience

Cycling in Uganda means cycling on unpaved roads. Sometimes these roads are red and full of potholes, causing you to bump and jolt along. Our local guide Lawrence laughingly calls this the ‘African massage’. It is all part of the charm of cycling in Africa. The pace is sometimes low, perhaps less than 10 kilometres per hour, but that gives you the time to truly take in your surroundings.

Highlights

Day-to-day highlights of the cycling trip in Western Uganda

Your journey begins relaxingly in Entebbe on Lake Victoria. After a transfer inland (with a photo stop at the equator!), you get on your bike. The first real cycling days around Fort Portal and the crater lakes are a perfect warm-up. You get used to the temperature, the bike, and the altitude.

The middle part of the trip is all about safaris. You cycle through and alongside Queen Elizabeth National Park and the famous Ishasha sector. This area is known for its tree-climbing lions. It is an exciting stage where the environment changes from a cultural landscape to pure wilderness.

The final section is more physically demanding but breathtakingly beautiful: the climb to the Bwindi rainforest and the crossing to Lake Bunyonyi. Here you sleep on an island and completely unwind. You conclude the trip with a unique cycling safari amongst the zebras and giraffes in Lake Mburo National Park, before returning to Entebbe.

Cycling trip amongst the wild animals in Western Uganda

Uganda is home to impressive wildlife, and during this trip, there is a high chance you will see them up close. In Queen Elizabeth National Park and Lake Mburo National Park, you will cycle, accompanied by guides, through the natural habitats of wild animals.

On the savannah: In Lake Mburo, you cycle safely amongst zebras, impalas, and giraffes. Because you are on a bike and don’t have a roaring engine, the animals often stand calmly.

The Big 4: In Queen Elizabeth National Park and during the boat trip on the Kazinga Channel, you have a great chance of seeing elephants, buffalo, lions, and leopards. (The rhino is only found in Ziwa – a park near Murchison Falls National Park, which is included in our Waterfalls and Nile tour).

Chimpanzees and monkeys: In the forests near Kibale and Bwindi, you will see countless primates, from baboons along the road to colobus monkeys in the trees.

Optional: The unforgettable gorilla trekking

Although not included as standard in the cycling tour itself, for many it is the reason to visit Uganda: the mountain gorillas. You can extend your trip with a gorilla trek in Bwindi. On foot, led by rangers, you trek straight through the jungle in search of a gorilla family. The moment you come face-to-face with a silverback is indescribable and emotional. An absolute must-do addition to your programme.

Complete freedom with your own guide and driver

This is an individual private trip. That means: no group, just you (and your travel companions) with a local team. You are accompanied by an experienced guide and a driver with a support vehicle. This offers the ultimate flexibility. Do you want to stay somewhere longer to look around? You can. Do your legs feel heavy one day, or do you want to skip a steep climb? Simply put the bike on the roof of the car and get in. You determine the intensity of the day. The car is always nearby for support, water, and safety, but often keeps an appropriate distance so you still maintain the feeling of freedom on the bike.

Also suitable for e-mountain bikes

You do not need to be a top athlete to enjoy this trip. The route is challenging due to the hills and the terrain, but very doable for the recreational cyclist with a good base level of fitness. Do you want to make it more comfortable for yourself? We rent out excellent Specialized e-mountain bikes locally. With these, you can conquer the hills with a whistle and have more energy left to look around.

Best time to travel to Uganda

December to February & June to August

These are the dry seasons. For most cyclists, these are the best months.

Cycling conditions: The unpaved roads (which you will ride on a lot) are hard and easily passable. You cover the most kilometres and have less chance of mechanical issues due to mud in your derailleur.

The downside: Because it is dry, the roads are extremely dusty. If a bus or lorry passes, you will briefly cycle in a red cloud of dust.

Temperature: Pleasantly warm (25-30°C), but in January/February it can be quite hot on the lower savannahs.

September & early October (or sometimes late May)

This is often the favourite of experienced Africa cyclists. The main rainy season has just ended or is yet to begin.

The advantage: The landscape is at its greenest (in the dry season, the landscape can look a bit arid and yellow). There is much less dust on the roads because the ground is still damp or there is an occasional shower.

The adventure: You might catch a shower now and then, but these are often short and heavy, after which the sun shines again.

March to May & October to November

If you are not afraid of tough conditions, you can go in these months.

The challenge: Uganda has many ‘red dirt roads’. When these get wet, they turn into a slippery substance that clings to your tyres like peanut butter. On steep hills (and Uganda is hilly!), this sometimes means walking or sliding.

Why do it anyway? It is extremely quiet (few tourists), nature is beautiful, and flights/lodges are cheaper.

Please note: In the southwest (Bwindi/Kisoro, where the mountain gorillas are), it rains so much during this time that some roads can become impassable, even for cyclists.

Personal and honest advice

We have created and ridden the routes ourselves. We therefore know exactly what awaits you. We are transparent about the difficulty of the rides and the conditions.
