The unforgettable small-group cycling holiday
At CvA travel, we believe that a cycling holiday is about much more than just pedalling away the kilometres. It is about creating unforgettable memories. When you join us, you choose an adventure far off the beaten track and away from mass tourism. We organise unique trips where discovering authentic culture and unspoiled nature takes centre stage. Whether you dream of cycling among wild animals in Uganda, exploring hidden gems in Vietnam and Laos, or braving the rugged mountains of Corsica; we make it happen. Furthermore, you do not have to worry about a thing. We arrange the overnight stays, challenging routes, luggage transport, and guides. This allows you to fully focus on the surroundings and the ultimate freedom that this special journey on two wheels offers.
The unique benefits of an organised group trip
A group trip offers countless benefits, especially if you love adventure but do not fancy the complex planning beforehand. Mapping out spectacular routes, arranging reliable luggage transport, and booking charming local accommodations is often a major task. We take this completely out of your hands. Moreover, cycling together means you share unique experiences directly with like-minded adventurers. A close-knit atmosphere develops very quickly. You encourage each other during a tough climb and raise a glass together at the end of the day to the kilometres ridden. It is also a fantastic way for solo travellers to explore new continents. You will feel part of the close group in no time and make friends for life, connected by a shared passion.
Discover breathtaking destinations during your cycling holiday
The world is beautiful from the saddle. That is why we offer a highly varied range of destinations for your ultimate cycling holiday. Are you a lover of the African continent? Then a tour through Uganda or Rwanda is an absolute must. You pedal over challenging unpaved roads while spotting elephants, zebras, and buffaloes in the wild. Do you prefer the serene tranquility of Asia? Then immerse yourself in the impressive culture of Vietnam or the pure nature of Laos. Closer to home, we offer spectacular routes across the rugged island of Corsica, where you are rewarded with panoramic views over the clear blue sea. Every destination has a unique charm, but they share one important characteristic: you discover the true, authentic soul of the country.
Who is an active group cycling trip suitable for?
A frequently asked question is whether you need to be an absolute top athlete to take part in our adventures. The reassuring answer is no. A group trip with CvA travel is structured in such a way that adventurers of different fitness levels can join in flawlessly. We operate on the principle of ‘starting together, finishing together’, but that does not mean we constantly ride in one tight peloton. The group often spreads out during the day, allowing everyone to cycle at a pleasant, individual pace. We group back together at the top of hills or at major junctions. Furthermore, the right bike helps enormously. If you are unsure about your fitness or simply want a bit more comfort during the climbs, an e-mountain bike or e-gravel bike offers the perfect solution. This way, significant physical differences disappear like snow in the sun.
Which bike suits your cycling holiday best?
Choosing the right equipment is crucial for a successful cycling holiday. Because we often ride off the beaten track and brave challenging dirt roads, we offer trips that are specifically tailored to gravel bikes and mountain bikes. The gravel bike is incredibly popular these days due to its versatility. You can easily pick up speed on flatter sections, whilst maintaining excellent grip on sand and gravel paths. This is ideal for the vast dirt roads in Uganda, for example. Do you prefer rougher terrain with steep climbs and technical sections? Then the mountain bike is your best friend. Naturally, we also offer electric variants. The e-MTB and e-gravel bike ensure you conquer steeper hills with considerably less effort. Whichever two-wheeler you choose, we are happy to advise you on the best option.
Soak up culture and discover nature during the group trip
The unique aspect of our approach is that we always look beyond just the sporting achievement. During a group trip with CvA travel, the bike is primarily the ultimate means of transport to dive deep into local culture and nature. You experience a destination much more intensely when you cross it at a human pace. You smell the delicious aromas of Asian markets, feel the dust kicking up on the African savannah, and stop regularly at small villages. Here, you are often warmly welcomed by the locals. These authentic encounters are central to our travel philosophy. In addition, we spend the night in special, carefully selected places. Think of charming lodges right on the edge of a wildlife park or authentic guesthouses. It is exactly this special balance between active exertion and cultural wonder that truly resonates.
Safety and professional guidance on your cycling holiday
Adventurous travel is wonderful, but safety naturally always comes first. Especially when you cycle in exotic destinations where the rules of traffic and unspoiled nature work differently. That is why every cycling holiday is guided by our expert team and highly qualified local guides. These guides know the area, the culture, and the most beautiful dirt tracks like the back of their hand. They also know exactly how to act in unexpected situations. Additionally, a robust support vehicle or support team always travels with our tours. This backup not only safely transports your suitcases but also acts as an immediate lifeline in the event of a breakdown. Should you experience a technical fault, or simply want to take a rest because your legs feel heavy, help is immediately at hand. You pedal; we provide the safety net.
How do you prepare for an unforgettable group trip?
Thorough preparation ensures that you start the adventure full of confidence. Although a group trip with us is absolutely not about competition, it is highly recommended to arrive at the starting line with a healthy basic level of fitness. In the months before departure, try to regularly do rides that are similar in duration and terrain to your upcoming adventure. Go for longer rides at the weekend to let your body get well accustomed to cycling for hours. Furthermore, we provide you with a very detailed packing list well in advance, including advice on technical cycling clothing and necessary visas. Sometimes we organise a briefing beforehand so that you know exactly what to expect. This way, you depart excellently prepared, with a relaxed mind and a good dose of healthy anticipation for your destination.
Sustainability and making a local impact during your cycling holiday
As a committed travel organisation, sustainability and responsible tourism are very close to our hearts. During a cycling holiday, you naturally travel in a very environmentally friendly way. However, our commitment to the planet goes beyond merely a minimal ecological footprint. We find it absolutely crucial to give something valuable back to the beautiful countries where we are guests. Therefore, we exclusively collaborate with local guides and deliberately book small-scale, locally run accommodations. As a result, the financial proceeds of your adventure flow directly into the local economy. In addition, we actively support regional projects, such as initiatives that offer vulnerable children a fair future. By pedalling along with us, you not only enjoy a unique experience but also directly create a positive, sustainable impact.
Frequently asked questions about the group trips
When you consider booking an adventurous cycling tour with CvA travel, it is perfectly logical that you have a few practical questions. Planning an active ride outside Europe, or on a challenging island like Corsica, naturally sparks curiosity right away. For example, what about the pace within the group? What happens if I unexpectedly have a mechanical breakdown in the middle of the wilderness? And what specific clothing should I pack? To help you as honestly and transparently as possible, we have clearly compiled the most important questions from our adventurers. Below you will find a series of educational and informative answers to ensure you get on the pedals perfectly prepared. Is your specific doubt not listed? Please feel free to contact us personally for advice.
What is the average level required for a group cycling trip?
Our trips are designed for sporty bon vivants. You do not need to be a professional cyclist, but a good basic level of fitness is important. Because you will be in the saddle for several consecutive days, often on unpaved paths, we recommend regularly taking rides of at least 40 to 60 kilometres at home. Opting for an e-mountain bike or e-gravel bike makes the trip accessible to cyclists with a slightly lower fitness level.
Can I join a group cycling trip as a solo traveller?
Absolutely! Many of our participants book alone. A group cycling trip is an excellent way to quickly meet new people. Because you brave the elements together, cycle challenging routes, and share experiences over dinner in the evening, a fun group dynamic develops quickly. As a solo traveller, you can often choose a single room for a small surcharge, or share a room with another participant of the same sex.
How large are the groups during an average group trip?
We believe in the power of small scale. Our groups typically consist of 4 to a maximum of 10 or 12 participants. This small group size ensures a lot of personal attention from the guides and makes it logistically possible to stay in unique, intimate accommodations. It also strengthens the team spirit, without you feeling like you are travelling in an anonymous mass.
What happens in the event of a mechanical breakdown or a flat tyre during the group trip?
Do not panic, mechanical breakdowns are simply part of adventurous cycling! Our experienced local guides and escorts are trained to quickly resolve technical problems, such as a puncture or a broken chain. Moreover, we always carry spare parts with us in the support vehicle. So you are never on your own and can safely continue your journey in no time.
Is my luggage transported during the cycling holiday?
Yes, we ensure that you can fully enjoy yourself without heavy luggage. During our organised trips, a support vehicle almost always travels with us, or separate luggage transport is arranged. Therefore, you only need to carry a small daypack or handlebar bag on the bike for your water, sunscreen, camera, and a windbreaker. Your main luggage will be neatly waiting for you at the accommodation in the evening.
What types of bikes can I rent for the group trip?
Depending on the specific destination and the condition of the road surface, we offer various high-quality rental bikes. Usually, you can choose from robust mountain bikes (hardtail or full-suspension) or modern gravel bikes. For those looking for that bit of extra comfort, we also offer electric variants in many areas, such as the e-MTB or e-gravel bike. We ensure the bike is adjusted to your height in advance.
Is it mandatory to ride an electric bike (e-bike)?
No, the choice between a conventional muscle-powered bike or an e-bike is entirely up to you. We do see that groups are increasingly mixed. The electric assistance is a fantastic tool to effortlessly bridge differences in fitness levels within a group, for example between partners or friends. Everyone cycles at their own desired level of exertion, but you still arrive at the top of the hill together at the same time.
What does a typical day look like during an organised cycling holiday?
We often start the day early with a hearty local breakfast, after which we prepare the bikes. In the morning, when the temperatures are often still pleasant, we cover most of the kilometres. Along the way, we stop regularly for coffee, taking photos, or a chat with the locals. A comprehensive lunch is often followed by a shorter cycling stage, after which you arrive at the accommodation in the late afternoon to wonderfully relax.
Is it safe to cycle among wild animals in Africa?
Yes, safety is our absolute top priority. Our African destinations, such as Uganda and Rwanda, offer the unique opportunity to spot wild animals from the bike. However, this always happens under the strict, professional guidance of highly experienced local guides and park rangers who can read animal behaviour flawlessly. We maintain a respectful distance at all times and never take unnecessary risks.
What if I cannot keep up with the group’s cycling pace?
It is not a race, and the most important thing is that you enjoy yourself. We cycle according to the ‘starting together, finishing together’ principle, but happily let the group spread out on long, safe stretches. We always wait at agreed points. Should you really be having a tough day or dreading a steep climb, in most cases you can always hop into the accompanying support vehicle for a rest.
What clothing and equipment should I bring on a cycling holiday?
Comfortable cycling clothing is essential. Think of multiple pairs of cycling shorts with a high-quality chamois, breathable cycling shirts, cycling gloves, and a reliable, approved bicycle helmet (which is also mandatory). Because we cycle in varying climates, it is handy to work in ‘layers’: bring a good wind and waterproof jacket, arm and leg warmers, and sunglasses. Prior to the trip, you will always receive a comprehensive, destination-specific packing list from us.
How are the overnight stays and accommodations arranged for the group trip?
We attach great value to atmosphere, comfort, and local involvement. You will stay in carefully selected, small-scale accommodations that fit the surroundings. This ranges from authentic guesthouses and charming boutique hotels to unique safari lodges on the edge of a wildlife park. We ensure the beds are excellent, so you can recover well after an intensive day on the pedals.
Can my dietary requirements or allergies be accommodated during a group trip?
Yes, in most destinations this is no problem at all. We ask you to pass on food allergies or specific dietary requirements (such as vegetarian or gluten-free) immediately when booking. Because we work closely with our local partners and the chefs in the accommodations, they can generally cater to these perfectly, allowing you to enjoy nutritious and safe meals every day.
What insurance do I need for an adventurous cycling holiday?
For all our trips, taking out a good travel insurance policy with worldwide coverage (if you are travelling outside Europe) is mandatory. Furthermore, always carefully check the policy conditions to ensure that ‘adventure sports’ or cycling on unpaved paths are covered. In addition, we strongly advise taking out cancellation insurance, in case you are unexpectedly unable to travel due to illness or unforeseen circumstances.
What is the best time to travel for the cycling trips?
The optimal travel time depends entirely on your chosen destination. For destinations like Vietnam and Laos, we prefer to avoid the heavy rainy season. For our Africa trips too, we carefully plan the departure dates around the dry seasons, so that unpaved roads remain easily accessible. You will find exactly the most favourable departure dates per specific group trip on our website.
