About the trip

This 12-day cycling tour offers a deep immersion into the stunning landscapes and rich culture of Northern Laos. The journey begins in the ancient royal city of Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and takes you across a wide variety of terrains: from rolling paths along rivers to challenging mountain climbs. Along the way, you will cycle through quiet villages, vast rice paddies, and impressive limestone karst mountains that give the landscape its dramatic character. In addition to the physical exertion, this is above all a cultural voyage of discovery. There are special opportunities to attend traditional alms-giving ceremonies, meet local communities, and explore hidden waterfalls and tranquil nature reserves. The route has been carefully crafted with a wonderful balance between sporty challenges and moments of rest and experience, all coming together to create a trip that will stay with you for a long time.

World Heritage Luang Prabang

You will explore the atmospheric and exceptionally well-preserved Luang Prabang. This city is known for its harmony between traditional Laotian architecture and French colonial influences. You will have time here to visit ancient temples and witness the traditional morning ceremony where many monks walk silently through the streets to receive their alms.

Kuang Si Waterfall

One of the natural highlights is the bike ride to the Kuang Si Waterfall. After a beautiful ride of about 30 kilometres through the green landscape, you are rewarded with a visit to these famous falls. Here, you can take a refreshing dip in the turquoise pools that cascade through the forest—a perfect way to cool down after your exertion.

Cycling off the beaten path during your Northern Laos cycling tour

The route distinguishes itself through special stages that stay far away from busy traffic. An extraordinary part of the journey takes you along a quiet, unpaved road beside the mighty Mekong River. Here you cycle close to the daily life of the local population and experience the purity of the countryside, far removed from the beaten tourist tracks.

Mountain challenge: Phoukaolak Pass

For the sporty cyclist, the Phoukaolak Pass is an absolute highlight. This climb is located in the north of Vientiane province and is known for its winding road and sweeping views. The name refers to a mountainous section of approximately nine kilometres where the road snakes upwards in countless hairpin bends. It is a tough climb, surrounded by dense, green mountain slopes and deep valleys, but a great sense of satisfaction and a spectacular descent await as your reward at the top.

Adventure around Vang Vieng

During a well-deserved rest day in Vang Vieng, you get the chance to explore the impressive karst landscape at your own pace. The surroundings invite you to partake in various optional activities. You can opt for a kayak trip on the river, explore caves, or even take a hot air balloon ride to admire the jagged mountain peaks from the air.

Nature as a grand finale to your trip in Northern Laos

The journey concludes in a special way with a stay surrounded by nature at the Nampien Yorlapa National Park. Here you sleep amongst the greenery, and there are opportunities to soar through the treetops via canopy walks and zip lines, ensuring an unforgettable end to the adventure.

Practical information

Level of the Northern Laos tour

The level of this tour is described as ‘mixed’. This means that there can be cyclists of varying levels within a single travel group. The route and guidance are adapted to accommodate this. Usually, a group naturally forms that wants to cycle a bit faster or further, alongside a group that prefers to take it easier. Because a support vehicle travels with you at all times, it is possible to skip the tougher sections and hop into the van. The use of an E-MTB (electric mountain bike) is also permitted, which easily bridges any speed differences and allows everyone to enjoy the adventure together.

Travel preparation and documents

Good preparation is essential. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months after your departure from Laos; if it is valid for less, entry may be refused. It is also necessary to apply for a Laos visa in advance and to arrange the correct insurance (travel, cancellation, and medical). For flights, it is recommended to book a multi-city ticket, flying outbound to Luang Prabang and returning from Vientiane.

Clothing and equipment for your cycling holiday through Northern Laos

Temperatures in Laos are generally pleasant to warm, meaning you will mostly cycle in short cycling gear. Essential items to pack include cycling shorts, cycling jerseys, cycling gloves, sunglasses, and a high-factor sunscreen. Because the weather in the mountains can change, it is also wise to pack a windbreaker, detachable arm and leg warmers, and a rain jacket. For the evenings, long clothing is recommended as protection against mosquitoes. Do not forget your swimwear for visits to waterfalls and lagoons.
