Making memories on the hilltops in Rwanda

Rwanda, the ‘Land of a Thousand Hills’, is the perfect place to push boundaries together. A cycling trip here is physically demanding, but that makes the reward all the greater. There is something special about climbing a hill together. You encourage each other, share the sweat and the effort, and ultimately you stand at the top together.

The view you share – over the vast tea plantations, the misty valleys, or the blue waters of Lake Kivu – brings you together. These are moments you will often reminisce about back home. Because you are actively engaged together, you experience the surroundings much more intensely than when sitting in a minibus. You share the smiles of the children along the road and the scent of the eucalyptus trees. It is quality time in its purest form.

Rwanda

Romance on the Congo Nile Trail

One of the most beautiful routes to cycle together is the Congo Nile Trail. This route winds along the shores of Lake Kivu. The setting here is downright romantic: green hills diving into the water, small bays, and fishing boats on the lake.

The accommodation along this route is often beautifully situated. Imagine sitting together on the terrace of your lodge after a day of cycling, cold drink in hand, watching the sun sink into the lake behind the mountains of Congo. The tranquillity, nature, and beauty of this place make cycling here a dream experience for couples.

Difference in level? The e-mountain bike is the solution

It is common for couples not to have exactly the same cycling level or fitness. In a hilly country like Rwanda, that can cause uncertainty. No one wants to hold the other up or feel rushed. At CvA Travel, we solve this easily with the e-mountain bike.

We rent out high-quality Specialized e-mountain bikes locally. If one of you would like some assistance on the steep climbs, this is ideal. This way, you still cycle together, at the same level and at the same speed. You arrive at the top at the same time and both still have energy left to enjoy the evening. It makes the trip relaxed and balanced, regardless of the difference in muscle power.

A tailor-made holiday for 2

Because you are travelling together, we can tailor the trip entirely to your dreams. Would you like to end the trip with a few days of relaxing on the beach at Lake Kivu? Do you want to soak up more culture in Kigali? Or are you specifically looking for the sporting challenge of extra kilometres?

Prior to the trip, we discuss your wishes and cycling experience. Based on that, we create a route that suits you perfectly. Whether it is a compact 10-day trip or an extensive 3-week tour: it will be your own, unique story.

Best time to travel to Rwanda

Rwanda is located close to the equator and therefore has a pleasant temperature of around 25 degrees Celsius all year round. Because we do a lot of climbing and descending on unpaved roads, rain does play a role in the travel experience.

  • Long dry season (June – August): For many couples, this is the ideal time to travel. The roads are dry, the sky is often clear, and the views are spectacular.

  • Short dry season (December – February): Also a wonderful period. The landscape is fresh and green from the preceding rains, but the days are predominantly dry and sunny.

  • Rainy seasons (March – May & October – November): It can rain more frequently and heavily during these months. This makes nature beautifully green, but the gravel roads can become muddy and slippery. For couples who like comfort and certainty, we recommend the dry periods, but those with an adventurous mindset can also enjoy a (often quieter) Rwanda in the shoulder seasons.
