Mountain bike holiday through Laos
Why a mountain bike holiday through Laos is the ultimate way to unwind
In a world that is turning ever faster, Laos feels like a breath of fresh air. It is not without reason that the country has the nickname ‘Please Don’t Rush’ (a nod to the abbreviation PDR of the official country name). During a mountain bike holiday through Laos, you immediately notice that the pace here is slower. There are no motorways full of honking traffic and no skyscrapers blocking the view. Instead, you cycle through a backdrop of endless green mountains, bamboo forests, and limestone rock formations emerging from the mist. The silence here is sometimes deafeningly beautiful. You only hear the crunch of your tyres on the gravel and the song of tropical birds. Because the country has not yet been overrun by mass tourism, everything feels very pure and authentic. It is the ideal destination for the cyclist who is not only looking for a physical challenge but also mental peace. You are truly away from it all here, surrounded by nature that is still largely untouched. The mountain bike is the perfect tool to deeply absorb that silence and beauty.

The best time to travel for a mountain bike holiday in tropical Laos
The climate in Laos is tropical and is determined by the monsoon. For a successful mountain bike holiday through Laos, choosing the right time to travel is essential, because you don’t want to be washed away on the unpaved roads. The very best period to cycle is the cool, dry season. This roughly runs from November to February. During these months, the humidity is lower, and the temperatures are pleasant, often between 20 and 25 degrees. In the mountains in the north, it can even be chilly in the mornings and evenings, so an extra layer of clothing is no unnecessary luxury then. The hot season starts from March, during which temperatures rise considerably and the landscape becomes drier and dustier. Moreover, agricultural land is often burned during this period, which can cause smoky air. The rainy season (May to October) makes the country beautifully green, but the red dirt roads then turn into mud pools, making mountain biking very tough and technical. We therefore primarily plan our trips in the cool winter months for the best experience.

Carefree on a mountain bike holiday in Laos
Laos is a beautiful country, but logistically it can be a challenge. Signposting is often missing on the small roads, and in the event of a breakdown, a bike mechanic is hard to find. Therefore, an organised mountain bike holiday through Laos with CvA travel is the safest and most comfortable option. We always provide a support vehicle that drives along with us. Your luggage is transported in this, so you can cycle light. There are also spare parts, extra water, snacks, and a first aid kit in the car. Should you have a day with less good legs, you can ride along for a bit. Our local guides speak the language and know how to find the most beautiful, hidden spots. They handle communication with the local population and arrange permits for certain areas. We select the nicest guesthouses and lodges, often in beautiful locations by the river or in nature. That way, you can fully focus on the adventure, while we take care of the logistics.
