Mountain Bike Holiday in Uganda
Mountain bike holiday in Uganda: cycling through rugged nature and culture
A mountain bike holiday through Uganda is a succession of variety and adventure. You cycle over unpaved roads, narrow singletracks, and rolling paths that take you right through nature reserves and local villages. The landscape is constantly changing: from green hills and savannahs to rainforests and national parks. Perhaps you are wondering how technical or tough this is. That is exactly what makes mountain biking in Uganda so special: the routes are challenging, but thanks to guidance and adjustable daily distances, they are suitable for various levels. This way, you combine sporting effort with an intense experience of the country.

The ultimate combination: MTB and Gorillas
Although the mountain bike takes centre stage, a trip to Uganda is often not complete without a visit to the mountain gorillas. Our routes are structured so that we pass Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Here you can leave the bike behind for a day for a gorilla trek.
This is a physical exertion of a completely different order. On foot, you make your way through the dense forest, in search of these gentle giants. The moment you come face to face with a silverback is emotional and impressive. It is the perfect addition to an active holiday. Besides gorillas, you can also spot chimpanzees in Kibale Forest during the trip, often simply in the trees along the road where you cycle.

Who is this mountain bike holiday for?
Our trips are designed to be accessible to a broad group of cyclists. You don’t need to be a top athlete to cycle in Uganda. We offer different levels:
Recreational: With the help of the e-mountain bike and the support vehicle, the trip is highly doable for the recreational cyclist who loves nature.
Sporty: For those seeking a challenge, tough climbs and longer daily distances are possible.
Expert: Events such as the Tour of Karamoja offer rugged trails and plenty of elevation gain for the experienced mountain biker.
Thanks to the small groups and the flexible attitude of our team, we ensure that everyone can enjoy themselves at their own level. Whether you cycle through the west for 12 days or seek out the wilderness of the north: it will be an adventure you will never forget.

The MTB terrain: From ‘African Massage’ to gravel paths
When you choose a mountain bike holiday in Uganda, you choose unpaved roads. The vast majority of the routes go over red earth and gravel roads that cross the country. This means you don’t just look around, but are also actively engaged with the surface. Sometimes the road is flat and hard, sometimes loose sand or strewn with boulders.
Our local guides have a wonderful term for this: the ‘African massage’. The roads can be full of potholes and bumps, giving you a good shaking. This is part of the charm of cycling in Africa; it is pure and unpolished. For the more experienced mountain bikers, certainly in regions like Karamoja, there are challenging singletracks and rocky paths to be found. But generally, the routes are perfectly doable for anyone with a basic level of fitness and some experience on a bike with gears.
