Cycling Holiday in Africa
Cycling Holiday in Africa: Why Uganda is Such a Special Destination
A cycling holiday in Africa conjures up images of endless landscapes, adventure, and the unknown. But Africa is vast, and every destination has its own character. Uganda stands out due to its unique combination of nature, culture, and accessibility for active travellers. Here, you don’t just cycle through impressive landscapes, but also through villages, past national parks, and right into the midst of daily life. This makes a cycling holiday in Uganda intense, varied, and personal: without it becoming extreme or unachievable.
A Whole Continent in One Country
Africa is enormously diverse, but in Uganda, you find that diversity within a relatively small area. It wasn’t for nothing that Winston Churchill called it the ‘Pearl of Africa’. During a cycling holiday here, the scenery changes almost daily. Where one day you cycle through dense, green rainforests and past tea plantations, the next day you find yourself on the open savannah amongst the acacias.
In the west, you have the impressive Rwenzori Mountains with their snow-capped peaks and the many crater lakes near Fort Portal. Travel to the northeast, towards Karamoja, and the landscape becomes more rugged and drier, with volcanic mountains rising out of nowhere. This enormous variety ensures there is never a dull moment. You don’t have to travel thousands of kilometres to see different sides of Africa; in Uganda, you simply cycle right through them.
Safari from the Saddle? You Can’t Get Any Closer
In many African countries, a safari is something you do from a closed vehicle. In Uganda, it can also be done on a bike. This is one of the reasons why the country is so unique for cyclists. In national parks such as Lake Mburo and parts of Queen Elizabeth National Park, you are allowed to cycle amongst the wildlife under the guidance of a ranger.
The feeling of silently cycling past a group of zebras or impalas is indescribable. Animals react differently to cyclists than to cars; they often remain calmer. Naturally, safety comes first. In areas with big game (such as elephants, buffaloes, and lions), experienced guides and armed rangers always cycle with you. They know the animals’ behaviour and ensure you can safely enjoy this unique interaction.

Adventurous Cycling Roads on Your Holiday
If you choose a cycling holiday in Africa, you choose adventure. In Uganda, this means you quickly leave the tarmac behind. You cycle over a network of red gravel roads and narrow tracks that connect villages and nature reserves.
Our local guides call this the ‘African massage’. The roads are sometimes flat and fast, but they can also be full of potholes, stones, and bumps. You might get shaken about a fair bit, but that’s part of the experience. The advantage of these roads is that there is hardly any other traffic. You have space and peace, far away from the busy motorways. For mountain bikers and gravel bikers, this is a paradise.

The Warmth of the Local People
A cycling holiday in Uganda is also a social experience. Ugandans are known as some of the friendliest people in Africa. Because you are on a bike, you are approachable. There is no glass or metal between you and the people.
Along the way, you are often waved at by children shouting “Mzungu!” (white person) who enthusiastically run alongside you for a bit. In the villages, you easily make contact. You stop for a quick chat, buy fresh fruit at a market, or observe how people go about their daily lives. These spontaneous encounters add a deeper layer to your trip and ensure you feel truly welcome.

Unique Extras in Africa: Gorillas and Chimpanzees
What truly sets Uganda apart from other cycling destinations in Africa is the presence of primates. It is one of the few places in the world where you can see mountain gorillas in the wild. A cycling holiday here can be perfectly combined with a gorilla trek in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. You leave the bike behind for a day and head into the jungle on foot for a ‘once in a lifetime’ experience.
In addition, you can spot chimpanzees in forests like Kibale and Budongo. Sometimes you even see monkeys simply sitting by the side of the road as you cycle past. This combination of active cycling and unique wildlife experiences makes Uganda a complete destination.
Safety and Excellent Facilities
Perhaps you have doubts about safety or comfort in Africa. Uganda is a stable and safe country to travel in. Furthermore, at CvA Travel, we provide a professional framework. We work with highly trained local guides who also have a strong understanding of bike mechanics (‘advance mechanics’).
A support vehicle always travels with you for luggage and assistance. The accommodations are carefully selected: from atmospheric lodges with a view to comfortable tented camps (‘lazy camping’) where your bed is already made up for you. So, you don’t have to compromise on comfort to experience the adventure.
Accessible for Every Level
It is often thought that cycling in Africa is reserved only for top athletes. In Uganda, we prove the opposite. Thanks to the use of good equipment, it is achievable for a wide group of people. We have a fleet of high-quality Specialized mountain bikes and e-mountain bikes on location.
With an e-mountain bike, you conquer the hills a lot more easily and save energy to enjoy your surroundings. This makes it possible even for recreational cyclists to discover this beautiful country. Combined with the option to hop into the support vehicle if it gets a bit too tough, a cycling holiday in Uganda is an achievable adventure for anyone with a healthy basic level of fitness.
