Holiday to the tropical rainforest in Rwanda

The tropical rainforest of Rwanda presents a stark contrast to the open landscapes found elsewhere in the country. In areas such as Nyungwe Forest National Park, you walk through dense forest, across suspension bridges, and along deep valleys. The rainforest is rich in birds, monkeys, and plants, and is renowned for its chimpanzees. A visit to this area is all about experiencing nature and tranquillity, showing just how versatile Rwanda is as a travel destination.

Contrast with the tea plantations

Surrounding the edges of the dark rainforest are bright green tea plantations. This contrast is beautiful to see. The clean lines of the tea bushes against the wild backdrop of the jungle make for stunning photographs.

At CvA travel, we often cycle through these plantations. It is a surreal landscape where you will frequently see women at work, picking tea leaves with large baskets on their backs. It is the perfect transition zone: you have views of the forest, but the openness to enjoy cycling or walking.

Best time to travel for your holiday in the tropical rainforest of Rwanda

Rwanda is located close to the equator and enjoys a stable climate with temperatures around 25 degrees Celsius. Because the rainforest is a humid ecosystem, it can rain here at any time, even during the dry season. Nevertheless, the timing of your trip makes a significant difference to your walking comfort.

  • Long dry season (June – August): This is the best time to visit the rainforest. The hiking trails are less muddy, and the chance of rain during your chimpanzee trek is at its lowest.

  • Short dry season (December – February): Also a good period. It might rain slightly more often than in the summer, but conditions are generally good for walks and the Canopy Walk.

  • Rainy seasons (March – May & October – November): A lot of rain falls in Nyungwe during these months. The trails can become very slippery and demanding. Mist can limit visibility but certainly gives the forest a mysterious atmosphere. Chimpanzees are sometimes easier to find as they stay lower to forage for food, but for the walker’s comfort, the dry months are highly recommended.

In search of Chimpanzees in the Rwanda tropical rainforest

The biggest draw of the rainforest are the primates. Nyungwe is home to thirteen different species of monkeys. The most famous of these is the chimpanzee. A chimpanzee trek is an adventurous experience. In the early morning, you head into the forest with a guide.

It is not an easy walk; chimpanzees are fast and move through densely overgrown terrain. But the effort is rewarded the moment you hear them. Their loud calls echo through the forest. When you finally find them, you can observe them playing, squabbling, or eating fruit high up in the trees. It is fascinating to see how closely their behaviour resembles our own.

Birdwatching in the Rwanda tropical rainforest

For bird lovers, the tropical rainforest of Rwanda is a dream. Nyungwe is home to over 300 bird species, 27 of which are endemic to this specific area (the Albertine Rift).

Even if you are not an expert, you will enjoy the colours and sounds. The Great Blue Turaco is a striking sight with its vibrant colours. Guides in the park are experts at recognising bird calls and will help you spot them amongst the dense foliage. Don’t forget your binoculars!
