Bespoke Cycling Holiday in Rwanda: Intense Cycling through Hills, Nature, and Culture

A cycling holiday in Rwanda is all about intensity. This is not a country you casually coast through, but a destination that challenges you to climb, explore, and persevere. In the Land of a Thousand Hills, you cycle along red dirt tracks, through mountainous landscapes, and past lakes and volcanoes, facing new elevation gains every day. Simultaneously, you will experience daily Rwandan life and incredible biodiversity—from colourful birds to gorillas and chimpanzees. Thanks to expert guidance and meticulously planned routes, this physical challenge becomes an experience that you won’t just feel in your legs, but will remember as one of your most extraordinary cycling adventures.

A Cycling Holiday in Rwanda, Just the Way You Want It

You can choose an adventurous bikepacking trip with your own guide, or a more comfortable option accompanied by both a driver and a guide. From a relaxed cycling holiday to a challenging route full of steep climbs—we ensure your dream trip becomes a reality.

A Bespoke Cycling Holiday in the ‘Land of a Thousand Hills’

Rwanda’s nickname is not a marketing gimmick; it is reality. Wherever you look, you see green hills rolling into the horizon. For cyclists, this means flat roads are a rarity. You are constantly climbing and descending. This makes Rwanda a fantastic destination for the sporty cyclist who isn’t afraid of a bit of sweat. The landscape is unbelievably green and pristine. Rwanda is known as one of the cleanest and safest countries in Africa. The roads vary from smooth tarmac to the characteristic red gravel roads that wind through tea plantations and terraced gardens. The view changes after every corner, and at the peaks, you are rewarded with panoramas over valleys, lakes, and volcanoes. It requires physical effort, but the beauty of the surroundings gives you the energy to keep pedalling.

The Legendary Congo Nile Trail in Rwanda

One of the absolute highlights of cycling in Rwanda is the Congo Nile Trail. This route runs along the shores of Lake Kivu, one of Africa’s Great Lakes, forming the watershed between the Congo and Nile river basins. It is a route that sits high on the bucket list of many adventurous cyclists. Here you cycle on unpaved roads, high above the lake, looking out over the glistening water and the mountains of the DRC on the opposite shore. Along the way, you pass coffee plantations and small fishing villages. Life is lived outdoors here: children wave at you, women carry colourful baskets on their heads, and fishermen prepare their boats for the night. The Congo Nile Trail is the perfect blend of physical challenge and cultural immersion.

Cycling Holiday with Wildlife: From Chimpanzees to Gorillas in Rwanda

Although Rwanda is physically smaller than neighbouring Uganda, its nature is at least as impressive. The country is world-famous for its population of mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park. The misty volcanoes of the Virunga Mountains provide the backdrop for an encounter that can change your life. A cycling holiday in Rwanda can easily be combined with a gorilla trek. You leave the bike behind for a day and head into the rainforest on foot for this unique experience. In the south, you will find Nyungwe Forest National Park, one of the oldest rainforests in Africa. Here you can search for chimpanzees and colobus monkeys, or walk high above the treetops on a Canopy Walk. Cycling along the edges of these ancient forests is magical; you can hear the sounds of the jungle as you pedal down the road.

Culture and Remembrance During Your Bespoke Rwanda Cycling Holiday

Rwanda is a country with a turbulent history, but also incredible resilience. During your bike ride, you will see a country looking to the future. The villages are lively and well-organised. The people are hospitable and proud of their country. Because you are travelling by bicycle, interacting with locals is easy. A stop at a local market or a cooperative where women weave baskets gives you insight into daily life. A visit to Kigali, the capital, is often the starting or ending point of the trip. It is a modern, green city. Visiting the Genocide Memorial is an intense and vital experience to understand the country’s context. The contrast between the past and the safe, friendly Rwanda of today is stark and deeply moving.

Support and Comfort: Our Approach

Because Rwanda is physically demanding, we provide the best support. Whether you choose a group trip or an individual journey, guidance is always available.

  • Support Vehicle: A vehicle travels with you carrying your luggage, water, and providing technical support. Is a climb too tough? Just hop in.

  • Guides: Our local guides know the routes, speak the language, and know exactly where to find the best coffee or lunch.

  • Bicycles: We work with high-quality mountain bikes. Given the hills, many travellers in Rwanda opt for an e-mountain bike. This allows you to joyfully conquer the “walls of Rwanda” while conserving enough energy to enjoy the surroundings.

Bespoke Group and Individual Cycling Trips in Rwanda

At CvA Travel, we offer two ways to discover Rwanda:

  • Group Trip: You join a small group of cycling enthusiasts. Together you take on the challenge. The camaraderie of climbing, suffering, and reminiscing in the evening enhances the experience. Departure dates are fixed.

  • Individual Trip: You travel with your own party (partner or friends) but with the luxury of a private guide and driver. You set your own pace and departure date. Want to stay an extra day at Lake Kivu? We will adjust the itinerary.

Both options offer the same high quality, route knowledge, and support. It is all about what suits you best.

Preparation for the Cycling Holiday: Practical Information for Rwanda

A cycling holiday in Rwanda requires good preparation. A basic level of fitness is helpful, but perseverance is more important. The roads are good, but the elevation gains are very real.

  • Climate: Rwanda is pleasantly warm but, due to the altitude, not sweltering hot.

  • Best Time to Travel: The dry seasons (June-August and December-February) are ideal, though the country is beautiful during the green seasons as well.

  • Vaccinations and Visas: We will inform you about the practicalities so you can set off without a worry.

Best Time to Travel for a Cycling Holiday in Rwanda

June to August (Long Dry Season)

This is the absolute peak season for cyclists, and for good reason.

  • Why: This is the best time for the famous Congo Nile Trail (see below). Because Rwanda is so steep, you need grip. During these months, the unpaved paths are hard and dry.

  • Temperature: It is ‘winter’ in Rwanda, which means perfect cycling weather during the day (around 25°C), but it can be chilly at night and early in the morning, especially at altitude.

  • Dust: Just like in Uganda, expect dust, especially when going off-road.

January & February (Short Dry Season)

Between the two rainy seasons.

  • Advantage: The landscape is incredibly green, and the skies are often clearer than in July (less hazy), providing spectacular views of the volcanoes in the north (the Virungas).

  • Risk: There may be an occasional shower, but the sun usually dries things up quickly. For paved roads, this is the most beautiful period.

March to May (Long Rainy Season) In Uganda, I called this “true adventure,” but for Rwanda, I am more cautious.

  • The Danger: Because Rwanda is much steeper than most parts of Uganda, unpaved descents become dangerously slippery in the rain. Braking on red clay while descending a 15% gradient is asking for trouble.

  • Exception: If you plan to stick 100% to the tarmac (Rwanda has fantastic tarmac, much better than Uganda), then this period is perfectly doable. It is quiet, and nature is at its most beautiful.
