Highlights of this Group Tour by Bike through Western Uganda

Travelling through Uganda is fantastic, but what makes this group tour through western Uganda so special? Here are the highlights.

A Diverse Journey through Uganda

Some cycling tours focus solely on nature or culture. This trip offers everything. That’s what makes it so unique. The diversity of Uganda – friendly people, varied landscapes, and abundant wildlife – ensures this is a true “once-in-a-lifetime experience.” The route suits both mountain bikes and e-mountain bikes, with options for challenging trails and easier paths for all levels.

The Must-Do Activity: Gorilla Trekking

Although this trip is centred around cycling, other highlights make it even more special. You’ll visit areas where mountain gorillas live, and guess what? A gorilla trek is one of the optional extras. Dare to come face-to-face with these gentle giants? Picture young gorillas playing while a silverback strolls by. It’s an experience beyond words. Our advice? Don’t miss it.

Discover the Best of Uganda

Some of the highlights: Semuliki National Park, Uganda’s highest peak Mount Rwenzori, Lake Mburo National Park, Kibale National Park where monkeys gather by the roadside, the Kazinga Channel where hippos are easily spotted, car and boat safaris, and the Batwa Trail offering a glimpse into authentic Ugandan life. The highlights are endless. This journey through Uganda is always a good choice. We promise.

Your cycling journey through Uganda officially begins today. With butterflies in your stomach and a fresh cup of Ugandan coffee in hand, you hop on your mountain bike. You’ll cycle through beautiful forests and along the river in Semuliki National Park, stopping at a local market. Taste the delicious fresh mangoes and bananas – far better than anything you’ll find back home. Once you’ve refuelled, the route continues through challenging yet stunning landscapes. You’ll cycle along the slopes of Mount Rwenzori – which translates to ‘Mountain of the Moon’ – where you’ll be rewarded with enchanting views over and over again. Satisfied, you end the day with a descent to the lodge. A fantastic first day of cycling in Uganda.

You’ll cycle past crater lakes, banana plantations, and tea farms, surrounded by lush greenery and the sounds of birds and frogs.

After a scenic lunch, you’ll descend into Kibale Forest National Park, home to chimpanzees, colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, and olive baboons. You’ll have to wait and see – but we guarantee you’ll enjoy it.

    Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

  • Day 5: Journey to Queen Elizabeth National Park

Today, your cycling holiday in Uganda takes you along a paved road – a welcome break from the dusty unpaved tracks. You’ll cycle through the final stretch of Kibale National Park, waving at cheeky baboons along the roadside.

Then, it’s back to the red dirt paths. You’ll pass banana and coffee plantations as you ride towards Rwimi, where children eagerly greet you with shouts of “Mzungu!” (foreigner). After a refreshing drink at a local Ugandan bar, you’ll transfer to Simba Safari Camp, situated on the edge of Queen Elizabeth National Park. From here, you can enjoy panoramic views over the sprawling savannah plains, where wildlife often makes an appearance.

Get ready for a day you’ll never forget. Today, you’ll cycle right through the savannahs of Queen Elizabeth National Park. What makes it so thrilling? Feeling too nervous? No worries. You can always opt to cover the distance by car and still enjoy the views.

In the evening, you’ll arrive at Bush Lodge, located near the Kazinga Channel. As you enjoy dinner, you’ll have a view of the hippos’ habitat. During the day, hippos stay in the water to keep cool, but at night, you might hear them stomping through the camp. In fact, you may even spot them walking past your banda. To ensure your safety, you’ll be escorted to your room after dinner.

    Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
    Accommodation: Bush Lodge Kazinga Channel

  • Day 7: Rest Day in Queen Elizabeth National Park

Today, the mountain bike stays put, and you have the freedom to fill your day as you wish. Consider a game drive: you have a high chance of spotting the Big Five. Besides wildlife viewing, you can also visit salt lakes or a local community living within the park.

Another option is trekking through the Kyambura Gorge. This 100-metre deep gorge, covered in tropical rainforest, divides the Queen Elizabeth Park. Within the gorge, you may encounter chimpanzees, red-tailed monkeys, white and red colobus monkeys, and a wide variety of birds. Don’t miss the crater lakes in the rainforest where you can catch a glimpse of bright pink flamingos – this is the only place in Uganda where you’ll find them. Quite special, isn’t it?

    Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
    Accommodation: Bush Lodge Kazinga Channel

    Optional Activities (not included):
Chimpanzee trek in Kyambura – €150.00 per person

  • Day 8: Cycling to Ishasha

Today, your adventure starts with a boat safari along the Kazinga Channel. After a short cycle to the starting point, you’ll board a boat where you may encounter elephants even before you set sail. From the water, watch for signs of hippos -bubbles rising to the surface reveal their presence. While cruising the channel, you’ll spot crocodiles, elephants, water buffaloes, various bird species, and warthogs from just metres away. After the boat safari, choose between a short or long ride – around 50 to 75 kilometres – cycling through Queen Elizabeth Park. You may find yourself riding past buffalos, elephants, and even tree-climbing lions.

    Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

You’ll ride past several villages and tea plantations, discovering how many shades of green nature offers. The cheerful locals you meet along the way will give you a much-needed energy boost. Then, it’s time for the climb. Following dirt roads, you’ll ascend through the misty hills of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to countless plant species and the majestic mountain gorillas. After a challenging but rewarding day of cycling, you’ll reach your lodge feeling satisfied and ready to relive the day’s experiences through the photos you’ve taken.

Just when you thought you’d faced the toughest ride of this cycling holiday, think again. Today, the Batwa Trail awaits you. This journey through Uganda starts with an easy, rolling road to warm up. Then, you cross a bridge and prepare for a challenging climb—welcome to the Batwa Trail!

Once you begin the descent, it’s time to stay alert. Not only is the path filled with sharp bends, but you’ll also encounter many locals along the way, carrying all kinds of goods. Some balance baskets on their heads; others have crafted inventive ways to transport produce. It’s a beautiful insight into local culture. And, at the same time, you get to enjoy the real Uganda with breathtaking views awaiting you around every corner.

    Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
    Accommodation: Gorilla Mist Camp

  • Day 11: Relax or Spot Gorillas

Today, the choice is yours. Relax at the lodge while enjoying the panoramic view, or…

Opt for the Gorilla Trekking. And we assure you: words can’t describe what you will experience here. “A unique and unforgettable experience” doesn’t even begin to cover it. Yes, it’s expensive, but it’s worth every penny.

Gorillas are critically endangered and can only be found in the wild in three countries. Uganda is one of them. During the trek, five armed rangers will guide you through the rainforest. This is not only to protect you from the gorillas but also from other wildlife in the area. Young elephants or animals guarding their food can sometimes be dangerous. But rest assured: you’re in safe hands.

You’ll hike up steep slopes through dense undergrowth. The rangers clear a path for you with machetes. This trek is not for the faint-hearted: it’s steep, tough, thrilling, and incredibly hot due to the long-sleeved clothing you need to wear. After a couple of hours of climbing and descending, you’ll encounter various wildlife – small monkeys, elephant tracks, and more. Then, finally, a glimpse of a gorilla. And wow, they are enormous. Standing just five metres away, eye-to-eye with such a remarkable and peaceful creature, your adrenaline kicks in – yet you feel no fear. Not even a little.

Once you put on your mask, you’re allowed to spend an hour observing the gorillas. Following them through dense vegetation is not easy; it’s a challenge to keep up. You’ll see young ones playing and a silverback keeping a watchful eye. Suddenly, from your left, you hear a gorilla let out a loud noise – making it clear who’s the strongest. After an hour, your time with the gorillas is over. Filled with joy and awe, still processing what you’ve just experienced, you make your way back down. Back at the lodge, you’ll have time to let everything sink in.

    What. A. Journey.

    Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
    Accommodation: Gorilla Mist Camp

    Optional Activity (not included):
Gorilla Trek – €775.00 per person

  • Day 12: Cycling to Lake Bunyonyi

Today, your journey takes you to one of Uganda’s most scenic spots: Lake Bunyonyi. Known for its misty hills and tranquil waters, it’s the perfect place to unwind after the thrilling adventures of the past days. You’ll cycle along rolling roads, passing terraced hillsides, lush vegetation, and picturesque villages. The beauty of the landscape will leave you speechless as you approach the calm shores of Lake Bunyonyi.

    Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
    Accommodation: Lake Bunyonyi Eco Resort

  • Day 13: From Lake Bunyonyi to Lake Mutanda

Today, you’ll cycle from one lake to another through an incredibly beautiful and scenic landscape. With views of the volcanic Virunga Mountains – located at the border of Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo – you’ll ride past onion farms and cattle ranches. The path offers a mix of gentle hills and challenging climbs, but the views make every effort worthwhile.

    Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
    Accommodation: Mulehe Lake Resort

  • Day 14: By Car to Lake Mburo National Park

Today, your legs get a well-deserved rest. After breakfast, your bike is loaded onto the vehicle, and you head towards Lake Mburo National Park. The centre also features a museum filled with local arts and historical artefacts, giving you a deeper understanding of Uganda’s rich heritage.

Upon arrival at your accommodation, you may wish to stretch your legs after the drive. Exploring the Ugandan countryside or simply enjoying the panoramic views of Mburo National Park from your hilltop lodge are both excellent options.

    Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
    Accommodation: Kigarama Wilderness Lodge

  • Day 15: The Last Day of Cycling in Uganda

Today’s adventure involves “cycling safari”. Accompanied by a ranger, you’ll hop on your mountain bike for a fascinating ride through Lake Mburo National Park. Expect to encounter wildlife such as zebras, giraffes, antelopes, and much more. You’ll also visit the Hippo Pool and climb up to the Kazuma Lookout Point.
