The Big 5 in Uganda: experiencing wildlife in a pure way

Uganda is known for its impressive nature and rich wildlife, and yes: you can spot the Big 5 here too. Lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards, and rhinos live scattered across various national parks, each in their own habitat. What makes Uganda special is the way you can experience these animals. Not just from a safari vehicle, but sometimes also while cycling or walking, close to the landscape and with an eye for peace and respect. This makes seeing the Big 5 in Uganda not a checklist exercise, but an intense nature experience.

The Buffalo: Power and character

The Cape buffalo is known for its impressive horns and sometimes sullen glare. In Uganda, you often see them grazing in large herds on the savannahs or bathing in mud pools to cool down. They are an essential part of the ecosystem.

During our trips, you will often encounter buffaloes. In Queen Elizabeth National Park and during the boat safari on the Kazinga Channel, they are almost impossible to miss. Because buffaloes can be unpredictable, it is important to approach them with respect. Our guides and rangers know exactly how to read the situation, so you can safely enjoy the sight of these powerful animals.

How we approach wildlife: Cycling and boating

At CvA Travel, we believe in an active experience. We don’t just look from a minibus, but get on a bike or in a boat.

  • Cycling Safari: In parks such as Lake Mburo and parts of Queen Elizabeth National Park, we cycle accompanied by guides. This is quiet and pure. You hear the birds and smell nature. It makes the encounter with wildlife much more intense.

  • Boat Safari: From the water, you see animals from a completely different perspective. Animals that come to drink pay less attention to the boat, allowing you to take beautiful photos.

More than the Big 5: A wealth of wildlife

Although the Big 5 often receive the most attention, Uganda has much more to offer. The country is one of the most biodiverse places on earth.

  • Hippos: In the Kazinga Channel and Lake Mburo, you almost trip over the hippos. It is one of the largest populations in the world.

  • Giraffes and Zebras: In Lake Mburo National Park, you cycle among the zebras and giraffes. These are safe animals to cycle amongst, providing a magical experience.

  • Primates: Do not forget the chimpanzees and the mountain gorillas either. Uganda is the best place to see these primates in the wild.

The Leopard and the Rhino: The most difficult to find

Of the Big 5, the leopard and the rhino are often the most difficult to find, but that makes the reward all the greater. Leopards are masters of camouflage and lead a solitary life. They are primarily active in the early morning or evening. With a bit of luck, you will see one resting in a tree or creeping through the tall grass in Queen Elizabeth National Park or Kidepo.

Rhinos complete the Big 5. Although they have disappeared from the wild in most of Uganda’s national parks due to poaching in the past, hard work is being done on their return. Uganda is home to the Big 5, so with the right planning (for example, a visit to the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary; although not specifically mentioned in our standard cycling programmes, it is the place for rhinos) you can see them.

The Elephant: Giants in the landscape

Elephants are perhaps the most visible members of the Big 5 in Uganda. They occur in large numbers in parks such as Queen Elizabeth National Park and Murchison Falls National Park. It is impressive to see how these enormous animals move through the landscape, often in family groups.

One of the best ways to see elephants is during a boat safari on the Kazinga Channel. This channel connects Lake Edward and Lake George. Elephants regularly come to the banks here to drink and bathe. From the boat, you can view them from very close by without disturbing them. Also during our bike rides through the parks, it is possible to spot elephants (at an appropriate distance and accompanied, of course), which provides an unforgettable adrenaline rush.
