Why planning is the foundation of safe gravel bike holidays

The beauty of gravel biking is swapping busy roads for quiet trails. But precisely because you sometimes leave civilisation behind, good planning is crucial for safe gravel bike holidays. You don’t want to get stranded in the middle of the wilderness without knowing where you are or where the next water stop is.

That’s why at CvA Travel, we invest a lot of time in mapping out the right roads. We choose trails that are challenging but don’t become dangerous due to extremely loose sand or perilous drops. Good route planning also means taking the difficulty of the day into account. We ensure the toughest climbs happen in the morning when you’re still fresh and your concentration is high. By knowing exactly what to expect beforehand, you ride with a much greater sense of peace. You don’t have to constantly check your navigation; you can trust that the route is safe and passable for your skill level.

The importance of technical equipment for your safety

The right choice of tyres and brakes

For safe gravel bike holidays, technical equipment is all about grip and control. A gravel bike looks like a road bike, but on unpaved trails, you need wider tyres with more tread. We recommend tyres of at least 40 millimetres wide. These absorb shocks better and prevent you from slipping in corners with loose gravel.

Furthermore, good disc brakes are essential. In countries like Rwanda or on Corsica, you’ll tackle long descents where you constantly need to steer and brake. Hydraulic disc brakes give you that extra power and precision, even when the trail is dusty or wet. Make sure your brake pads are checked before departure, as they wear out much faster in the mountains than in the flat Netherlands.

Maintenance and emergency repairs

A technical defect doesn’t have to be a disaster, as long as you’re prepared. For safe gravel bike holidays, a well-maintained bike is the first step. Check your chain, your bolts, and your gears. We also recommend riding ‘tubeless’ (without inner tubes). This reduces the chance of getting a puncture from thorns or sharp stones.

Should something happen, it’s important that you know the basics of an emergency repair, such as plugging a tyre. Fortunately, during our organised tours, there is always a mechanic and a support vehicle nearby with spare parts. This safety net ensures that a small technical issue never ruins your entire holiday, but is resolved quickly and professionally.

The added value of professional guidance on the road

Finding your own way in a foreign country can be exciting, but it also carries risks. For safe gravel bike holidays, we always work with experienced guides. They know the local conditions and know exactly which trails are still safe after a rain shower and which are not.

A guide also sees more than you do; they warn you of approaching oncoming traffic in a blind corner or point out a loose stone. Moreover, our local guides speak the language of the country. If medical help is needed or something needs to be arranged with the locals, they are your primary point of contact. The calmness a professional guide exudes ensures that the whole group stays relaxed while riding. You can fully focus on pedalling and the beautiful surroundings, whilst the guide keeps an eye on safety and time.

Why the support vehicle is your best friend while gravel riding

The presence of a support vehicle is perhaps the most reassuring part of our trips. On safe gravel bike holidays, the car serves as a mobile base station. It holds not only your luggage but also a comprehensive first aid kit, tools, a spare bike, and plenty of food and drink.

The vehicle is never far away and can be on the scene immediately in case of a breakdown or injury. This means you never have to lug your gear around or wait hours for help by the side of the road. The driver is in close contact with the guide on the bike. This backup provides a massive sense of peace of mind, especially when cycling through remote areas with few facilities. With CvA Travel, you never cycle alone in the unknown, but always with the certainty of professional support behind you.
