Individual trip in Rwanda
The focus on yourself and the surroundings of Rwanda
On an individual trip in Rwanda, there are no distractions from a group dynamic. It is purely about you, your bike, and the landscape. Rwanda is the ‘Land of a Thousand Hills’, and you notice that every kilometre. You are physically engaged with the terrain: climbing, changing gears, descending, and climbing again.
Because you travel individually (alone or with your own party), you can fully immerse yourself in this rhythm. You do not have to wait for anyone, and no one has to wait for you. This creates a meditative experience. You see the terraced gardens passing by, smell the eucalyptus trees, and hear the sounds of the villages. It is an intense way of travelling where your mind clears and your senses are sharpened.

Best time to travel for a cycling holiday in Rwanda
Rwanda is located close to the equator and has a stable climate. The temperature is pleasant all year round, often around 25 degrees Celsius. Because the country is hilly, it can be slightly cooler at higher altitudes. For an individual cycling trip, it is important to take the rain into account, as this determines the condition of the unpaved roads.
Long dry season (June – August): This is the ideal period for cyclists. The gravel roads are hard and dry, the sky is often clear, and you have stunning panoramic views.
Short dry season (December – February): This is also a very good time. The landscape is fresh and green after the autumn rains, but the days are predominantly dry.
Rainy seasons (March – May & October – November): It rains more frequently during these periods. Nature is at its greenest, but the roads can become muddy and demanding. For an individual traveller who is flexible and loves adventure, this can be absolutely fine (and it is quieter in the parks), but for the most cycling comfort, we recommend the dry months.
The Congo Nile Trail: Your personal challenge on holiday in Rwanda
For the individual cyclist, the Congo Nile Trail is an absolute highlight. This route along Lake Kivu is world-famous. You cycle on unpaved roads high above the lake, with views of the mountains of Congo.
On your own (or with your partner), this route is even more impressive. The silence on the stretches between the villages, the sound of the wind and the water; it all hits you harder. You pass fishing villages and coffee plantations. Because you are in a small party (just you and the guide), contact with the local population is very pure. People are curious and open, which leads to spontaneous and valuable encounters.
Tailor-made nature experience: Primates and Safari by bike
An individual trip offers the opportunity to visit exactly the parks you want to see. Rwanda is famous for its primates. A visit to the mountain gorillas in the north is easily scheduled. You leave the bike behind for a day for this unforgettable trek.
Nyungwe Forest in the south (for chimpanzees and the Canopy Walk) and Akagera National Park in the east (for the Big 5) are also options. Because you are not dependent on a group schedule, we can arrange the permits on the days that suit you. This way, you build your own dream trip, with the perfect balance between cycling and safari.

Flexibility during your cycling holiday in Rwanda
Rwanda is relatively small, which means travel distances are short. This gives you a lot of freedom during an individual trip. You do not have to rush to be indoors before dark. Do you want to stop somewhere longer to take a photo of the volcanoes? Do you want to stop at a small school? Or do you just want to pedal hard for a bit? It is your trip.
The routes can be organised flexibly. We can adjust daily distances to your fitness level on the day. The itinerary of the trip is also in your hands. Do you want to emphasise the physical challenge of the Congo Nile Trail? Or do you want to schedule more time for culture in Kigali and relaxing at Lake Kivu? In consultation, we put together the ideal programme.
Culture and comfort in Rwanda
During an individual trip, you stay in accommodation that suits your wishes. Rwanda has beautiful lodges, often with views of the lakes or the hills. The country is incredibly clean and organised, which makes travelling individually very pleasant.
You also get to know the country through its history. A visit to the Genocide Memorial is impressive. Because you travel with a private guide, you can talk about this in a respectful and personal manner. It adds depth to your trip and shows how resilient and positive modern-day Rwanda is.
