Gravel bike holiday through Uganda: endless roads and pure experience

A gravel bike holiday through Uganda is all about freedom, rhythm, and experiencing the landscape. You cycle on quiet gravel roads that connect you to remote villages, open savannahs, and vast nature reserves. The terrain is varied, but less technical than mountain biking, allowing you to put in longer days and truly cover distance. Perhaps you are wondering if Uganda is suitable for gravel biking. It is precisely the combination of unpaved roads, little traffic, and impressive landscapes that makes the country ideal for this type of travel. With guidance and flexibly chosen routes, you experience Uganda in a fluid, adventurous way.

Equipment and preparation

For a successful gravel holiday, the right equipment is important. The roads in Uganda can be rough. You can choose to bring your own gravel bike. If so, make sure it is ‘Africa proof’: sturdy tyres (preferably tubeless and wide) and enough gears for the steep climbs are a must.

Don’t have a suitable bike or prefer not to lug your own bike around? We have a fleet of Specialized mountain bikes and e-mountain bikes on location. A hardtail mountain bike is often a comfortable alternative to a gravel bike on Ugandan roads. Our guides are trained in maintenance, so in the event of technical problems, you will be helped quickly.

Routes full of variety: From crater lakes to valleys

During a gravel holiday in Uganda, no two days are the same. In the west of the country, you cycle through a green and hilly backdrop. Here, the gravel roads wind past dozens of crater lakes and straight through endless banana and tea plantations. The hills provide the necessary elevation gain, making it a sporty challenge.

After the green highlands, you often descend to the Rift Valley. Here, the roads become flatter and straighter, and the view changes to vast savannahs. You can pick up speed here and enjoy the wind in your face, while seeing the mountains you came from in the distance. This variety between climbing in the green and picking up pace on the plains makes Uganda a dream destination for the gravel cyclist.

Wildlife along the gravel paths

A unique aspect of gravel biking in Uganda is that you do not only cycle through nature but also through the habitat of wild animals. The gravel roads sometimes run straight through or alongside national parks. For instance, in Lake Mburo National Park, you can enjoy wonderful cycling on paths where you encounter zebras, impalas, and giraffes.

In Queen Elizabeth National Park too, there are routes where you can head onto the savannah (accompanied by a guide and ranger). It is an indescribable feeling to be sitting on your bike and see a herd of elephants or buffaloes a few hundred metres away. Because you are quiet on the bike and do not produce engine noise, the experience is very intense, and you hardly disturb the animals.

Who is this gravel bike Uganda trip for?

This type of trip is ideal for cyclists who love to keep a steady pace and cover kilometres, but who also have an eye for their surroundings.

  • Fitness: Uganda is not flat. A good basic level of fitness is necessary to enjoy the hills in the west.

  • Technique: The roads are technically less difficult than mountain bike trails, but some experience with unpaved cycling is recommended.

  • Options: Want to travel together with someone who is less trained? The e-mountain bike is a perfect solution to level out differences in fitness, so you can both enjoy the same route together.

Culture and connection in the villages

The gravel roads are the lifeblood of the countryside. As you cycle, you pass countless small villages and marketplaces. This makes the trip very social. Ugandans are incredibly friendly, and children often enthusiastically run to the road to greet you.

Because you are approachable on the bike, it is easy to stop for a moment. For example, to buy fresh fruit at a roadside stall, such as a juicy pineapple or jackfruit. Your guide speaks the language and helps you to have a chat. This way, you don’t just get to know the country from the saddle, but you also make genuine contact with the people who live there.

The Ugandan gravel paradise: The ‘African Massage’

As a gravel biker, you look for unpaved roads where you can cover kilometres without constantly having to brake for technically difficult obstacles. Uganda is perfect for this. As soon as you leave the capital, the tarmac quickly turns into vast networks of red gravel roads (‘murram roads’). These roads run straight through the landscape, connecting villages with one another.

Our local guides jokingly call the experience of cycling on these roads the ‘African massage’. The surface can vary from hard-packed sand to roads with a few more stones or corrugations (washboard). You feel the road, you might get shaken about a bit, but the rhythm is wonderful. It is the purest way to cross the country, far away from busy traffic and right in the middle of the elements.
