The mecca of the ‘Red Dirt Roads’

As a gravel biker, you dream of endless unpaved roads where you can build up a good pace without too much technical hassle. Rwanda offers exactly that. The landscape is criss-crossed by an enormous network of ‘red dirt roads’. These roads of red earth are the lifeblood of the countryside.

The surface is generally hard and very rideable. Naturally, there are bumps and potholes – our guides call this the ‘African massage’ – but you don’t have to constantly brake for large boulders or tree roots. This means you can get into a wonderful rhythm. You hear the crunch of the gravel under your tyres as you whizz through a green backdrop of tea plantations and banana trees. It is gravel biking in its purest form.

The Land of a Thousand Hills: ideal for your gravel bike holiday

Rwanda is not flat. That is an understatement. During a gravel holiday here, you are constantly climbing or descending. For the cyclist who loves endurance, this is a paradise. The climbs are often steady and not extremely steep, allowing you to easily maintain your rhythm.

It is hard work, but the reward is always there. At the top of every hill, you have another new, sweeping view over valleys, lakes, or volcanoes. The descents are long and clear, meaning you feel the wind in your face and can really pick up speed. The constant interplay of gaining altitude and descending again provides a physical challenge that gives great satisfaction at the end of the day.

Part of the local flow on your gravel bike holiday

You are never the only cyclist on the gravel roads of Rwanda. The bicycle is an important means of transport here. You share the road with ‘bicycle taxis’ transporting people, and with men stacking their bicycles sky-high with bags of charcoal, bananas, or sugar cane.

This creates a special connection. You are not a tourist speeding past in a minibus, but a fellow road user. You greet each other, laugh at the effort during a climb, and share the road with pedestrians and goats. In the villages, children wave enthusiastically at you. This interaction makes gravel biking in Rwanda very social and human. You don’t just see the country; you become part of it for a while.

Variety: Nature parks and culture in Rwanda

The beauty of gravel biking in Rwanda is that you can string the nature parks together. For example, you cycle from the north (Volcanoes and Gorillas) via Lake Kivu to the south (Nyungwe Forest).

Along the way, you have plenty of time to stop. At a coffee plantation to taste the local harvest, or at an impressive museum that tells the history of the country. Because you are on a bike, you are flexible. Your guide can adapt the route if you want to spend longer looking around somewhere. This way, you combine sporty cycling with culture and nature.

Best time to travel for your gravel bike holiday in Rwanda

Rwanda has a stable tropical climate with temperatures around 25 degrees Celsius. For gravel bikers, the condition of the unpaved roads is crucial, and this is determined by the rain.

  • Long dry season (June – August): This is the best time for gravel biking. The roads are hard and dry, which means you can build up good speed and won’t sink into the mud. It can, however, be a bit dusty.

  • Short dry season (December – February): Also an excellent period. The landscape is green and the roads are generally easily passable.

  • Rainy seasons (March – May & October – November): It can rain heavily during these months. The red gravel roads can then turn into muddy slides. This makes cycling demanding and slow. For those coming purely for the joy of cycling and the kilometres, we recommend the dry months. Are you adventurous and don’t mind a bit of mud? Then the landscape is at its most beautiful during the rainy season.
