Best time to travel to Rwanda
Rwanda has two drier periods: from June to September and from December to February. These months are the most suitable for active trips, as roads are more passable and cycling feels more comfortable. In the wetter months, the landscape is greener and quieter, but routes become more demanding due to mud and a softer surface. Wildlife trips are possible all year round, although visibility varies by season. The best time to travel therefore depends on what you want to do and how much of a physical challenge you are looking for.
The climate: The land of eternal spring
Rwanda is located close to the equator, but due to its high altitude (most of the country lies above 1,500 metres), it is never stiflingly hot. The temperature is pleasant and stable all year round, around 25 degrees Celsius during the day. In the evenings and early mornings, especially in the mountains near the volcanoes or in the rainforest, it cools down nicely.
The weather in Rwanda is not determined by heat or cold, but by rain and drought. Because we organise cycling trips that largely take place on unpaved roads, rainfall is the most important factor for your planning. After all, the surface determines how demanding the ride will be.

Best time to travel for cycling holidays in Rwanda (MTB & Gravel)
For cycling holidays, we at CvA Travel usually advise the dry seasons.
Grip and safety: On the hilly routes of the Congo Nile Trail, grip is essential. On dry roads, you have control. In the mud, the chance of sliding is greater.
Energy: Cycling through mud takes twice as much energy. Although an e-mountain bike can help, the surface remains the deciding factor for your enjoyment.
Logistics: During the dry season, you can enjoy outdoor breaks and the views more.
When are you going on holiday to Rwanda?
Opt for certainty: Choose June, July, August, January, or February. You have the greatest chance of dry roads, clear skies, and optimal conditions for both cycling and gorilla trekking.
Opt for green and adventure: Choose September, December, or the edges of the season. You get the benefits of the dry season, but enjoy a greener landscape and often slightly lower flight prices.

The short dry season: December to February
Between the two rainy seasons is a shorter dry period. This is a favourite time for many connoisseurs.
Green landscape: Because it rained in the preceding months (October/November), the landscape is fresh and bright green. The tea plantations and hills look magnificent.
Cycling conditions: The roads are predominantly dry and easily passable. There may be an occasional short shower, but it often clears up quickly.
Birds: For bird lovers, this is a prime time, as there are many migratory birds in the country.
Best time to travel for a Safari in Akagera
In Akagera National Park (savannah), different rules apply than in the rainforest.
Dry season: The grass is short and waterholes dry up. Animals gather around the large lakes (such as Lake Ihema) to drink. This makes spotting wildlife much easier. This is the best time for the Big 5.
Rainy season: The park is beautifully green and full of flowers. Many young animals are born. However, the grass is high, making it easier for predators such as lions and leopards to hide.
